[K-Traveler] Mongolia: facing myself in untouched nature

몽골 – 때 묻지 않은 자연을 만나다. 나를 만나다

처음 만난 몽골은 별무더기와 꽃천지라는 두 단어로 각인됐다.

 

인천공항에서 세 시간 남짓 걸리는 울란바토르공항. 인공 건물이지만, 순수한 자연으로 향하는 시작은 거기부터였다.

 

다섯 시간 넘게 포장도로와 비포장도로를 달려 도착한 바얀고비사막에서 첫날 여정을 풀었다. 끝없이 펼쳐진 사막 모래언덕 뒤로 저무는 노을은 서울서 보는 것과는 사뭇 달랐다. 자연을 덮은 노을의 붉음은 비현실적으로 보일 만큼 아름다웠다.

 

사방을 둘러봐도 건물 하나 보이지 않았다. 인간의 흔적이 없다. 힘겹게 산 정상에 올랐는데 보이는 거라곤 빌딩과 아파트뿐이었을 때 실망했던 기억을 단번에 날려버렸다. 건물도 공해였던 것이다.

 

모래바람을 맞으며 지는 해를 등지고 낙타를 탔다. 안장과 고삐가 없었기에 양손으로 앞쪽을 감싸 안거나 쌍봉 사이에 앉아서 낙타와 호흡을 맞춰야 했다. 따스한 체온이 전해질 정도로 동물을 오래 안고 있기는 처음이었다. 사막과 더불어 또 첫 경험을 하는 순간이었다.

 

"살아 있는 동안 셀 수 없이 많은 날들에 인간을 태우고 태우겠지", 하는 연민이 드는 동시에 30년 이상 거의 매일 일터와 가정을 종종거리며 오갔던 내 모습이 겹쳐졌다. 동병상련을 낙타로부터 느꼈다.

자정 무렵이었다. 별을 보기 위해 담요와 카메라를 챙겨 빛이 없는 곳까지 한참을 걸었다. 드디어 생전 처음 은하수를 몸소 ‘영접’했다. "먼지 같은 저 별 무더기가 은하수 맞아요?", 하는 우스운 질문을 하고 말았다.

 

길지 않은 시간, 별똥별도 여러 개 떨어졌다. 서울에서 나고 자랐고 시골에 연고가 없어 별 쏟아지는 밤하늘을 본 추억이 없다. 빛 공해에 시달리는 대도시 밤에서 별자리를 찾기란 쉽지 않다. ‘하늘의 별따기’가 아닌 ‘도시에서 별보기’가 되고 있다.

 

한참 동안 별 사진을 찍은 후 담요에 몸을 누이고 검푸른 하늘에 총총히 빛나는 별들을 올려다봤다.

 

몇 달 전 직접 봤던 김환기 화백의 ‘우주’를 떠올리며, 그가 별을 보며 받았을 예술적 영감을 잠시나마 이해하는 기분이 들었다. 우주와 하나 된 느낌이었다.

 

다음날은 테를지국립공원 내 엉거츠 산 트레킹이었다. 국립공원이 공항에서 멀지 않았으므로 전날 사막을 향해 갔던 거리만큼 다시 돌아와야 했다.

 

은하수를 보러 가는 다섯 시간은 견딜만했는데, 돌아오는 길은 참을 수 없이 힘들게 느껴지다니 스스로 간사한 존재란 생각에 헛웃음이 나왔다.

우람한 바위와 푸른 초원이 끝없이 펼쳐진 테를지국립공원은 어느 방향으로 카메라를 돌려도 멋진 풍광의 사진이 나왔다

 

대여섯 시간 걸린 산행이었지만 지루한 줄 몰랐다. 다채로운 야생화, 고도가 높아질수록 점점 큰 탄성을 자아내게 하는 산의 자태. 여러 꽃이 어울려 있기도, 무리를 지어 있기도 했다.

 

산행 내내 머릿속을 맴도는 노래가 있었다. 독일민요 ‘어여쁜 장미’

참 아름답다

거친 언덕길

외로운 숲속에

그 누굴 보라고 예쁘게 피었나

 

순간 머리를 맞은 듯 떠오른 생각이 있었다. '꼭 봐줄 사람이 있을 필요가 있나?'

 

사람이 보든 말든 야생화는 자연의 이치대로 스스로 모습으로 피고 질 것이다. ‘예쁘다’는 감상도 인간의 것이다. 꽃은 오롯이 ‘존재’다. 자연이다.

 

‘그저 존재하는 아름다움’을 갖는 야생화로부터 평생 필요 이상으로 남을 의식하며 살았다는 생각이 들었다.

사회생활 첫발을 내딛은 직장에서 정년퇴직한 뒤 여유로움과 앞날에 대한 불안감을 동시에 안고 떠난 여행이었지만, 뭔가 정리되는 듯한 여정이었다.

 

낙타와 우주, 그리고 야생화와의 조우를 통해 퇴직 후 혼란스럽던 생각이 조금 정리됐다. 이런 점에서 여행이란 ‘만남’이다. 종국에는 나와의 만남.

 

칭기즈칸 어록으로 몽골 단상을 대신한다.

 

“적은 밖에 있는 것이 아니라 내안에 있었다. 나는 내게 거추장스러운 것은 다 쓸어버렸다. 나를 극복하는 그 순간 나는 칭기즈칸이 됐다.”

Mongolia: facing myself in untouched nature

My first impression of Mongolia was "star mounds" and "floral paradise."

 

It was about a three-hour flight from Incheon Airport to Ulaanbaatar Airport. While the airport itself was a man-made structure, the journey towards pure nature began from there.

 

After more than five hours on paved and unpaved roads, I embarked on my first day's journey in the Gobi Desert, Bayan Gobi. The sunset behind the endless sand dunes was unlike anything I had ever seen in Seoul. The reddish glow of the setting sun in the natural landscape was surreal and breathtaking.

 

Looking around, there was not a single building in sight. There were zero traces of human presence. I had initially felt disappointed when I climbed a steep hill, expecting to see more than just buildings and apartments, but it turned out that the buildings were pollution as well.

 

Riding a camel while feeling the desert wind against my face, I watched the setting sun. Since there were no saddles or reins, I had to either hold onto the front or sit between the twin humps of the camel, synchronizing my movements with the animal. It was the first time I had held an animal for so long that I could feel its warmth. It was a moment of first experiences in the desert.

As I gazed at the stars around midnight, I wrapped myself in a blanket and carried my camera to a place devoid of light. Finally, I personally "welcomed" the Milky Way for the first time in my life. I couldn't help but ask the whimsical question, "Are those dust-like stars the Milky Way?"

 

In a short time, several shooting stars streaked across the sky. Having grown up in Seoul without rural roots, I had no memories of watching a starry night sky. It's not easy to find constellations in the light-polluted night sky of a big city. “Watching stars in the city” is getting closer to “shooting for the stars” these days.

 

After taking pictures of the stars for a while, I lay down on the blanket and looked up at the sparkling stars in the deep blue sky. I recalled Kim Hwan-gi's painting "Universe," which I had seen a few months ago. For a brief moment, I felt like I understood the artistic inspiration he might have received while looking at the stars. It felt like I had merged with the universe.

 

The next day, I went trekking in the Yol Valley, located within the Terelj National Park. Since the national park wasn't too far from the airport, I had to retrace the same distance I had traveled towards the desert the day before.

 

The five-hour journey to see the Milky Way had been bearable, but the return journey felt unbearably strenuous. Oh fickle me!

The vast expanse of rocky terrain and green meadows in Terelj National Park provided picturesque views in every direction, making it a photographer's paradise.

 

Although the hike took over six hours, I didn't find it monotonous at all. I was captivated by the colorful wildflowers and the majestic beauty of the mountains, which only grew as our altitude went up. There were various flowers, both alone and in clusters.

 

Throughout the hike, a song kept playing in my mind: a German folk song, "Beautiful Roses."

 

“Beautiful roses/ Truly beautiful/ On the rugged hillside/ In the lonely forest/ Who bloomed so beautifully for someone to see?”

 

I had a thought that suddenly crossed my mind: "Is there really a need for someone to see? Whether people see them or not, wildflowers will bloom according to the laws of nature. The appreciation of “beauty” is also a human construct. Flowers are simply “existence.” They are “the nature."

I realized that I had lived my life, consciously or not, with an excessive need to leave a mark -- even more so after retiring from my first job in the corporate world and carrying the burden of both leisure and uncertainty about the future.

 

This trip, while initially driven by a mix of leisure and anxiety, felt like a journey of self-discovery and reflection. In this sense, travel is a "meeting," ultimately a meeting with oneself.

 

I'll borrow a quote from Genghis Khan to sum up my thoughts on Mongolia: "What was needed was not outside of me, but inside. I swept away everything that weighed me down. The moment I overcame myself, I became Genghis Khan."
