복자기 나무들의 행진과 단양여행

충북 단양군 명승지 ‘단양 팔경’과 ‘단양 잔도 길’은 장마철 시작 전인 6월 초중 순에 여행하기 좋은 곳이다. 머릿속에 절경을 그리며 설렘을 안고 출발했다.

단양에 접어드니 차창 밖에는 초록 우산들이 일렬로 줄지어 행진하고 있었다.

키 큰 가로수들이 관광객에 첫인사를 정중하게 하고 있었는데, 해외에 온 듯한 착각에 잠시 빠졌다.

단양 가로수는 '복자기 나무'라고 한다. 단풍나무 중에서 가장 색이 곱고 진하며 세계적으로 널리 알려져 있는 조경수다.

오래전 이탈리아 여행 중에 노랗고 동그란 것이 달려 있는 가로수를 본 적이 있다. 오렌지 나무였다. 도로변에 오렌지가 달려 있는 게 너무 신기해서 혼자 사진을 찍다가 일행을 놓친 적이 있다.

또 다른 경험은 100년에 한 번 피는 검은 대나무 꽃이 핀다는 뉴스를 보고 강원도 강릉 오죽헌을 찾은 때다. 오죽헌 가는 길의 가로수에는 초록 대신 주황이 눈에 확 들어왔다. 주렁주렁 달린 감이었다.

그때 우리나라에도 과일나무 가로수가 있음을 알게 됐는데, 이번 단양 여행에서 예쁜 가로수인 복자기 나무를 본 것이다. 비록 과실수는 아니지만, 또 하나의 잊지 못할 가로수로 기억될 것이다.

어느 새 관광버스는 단양 시내를 통과했다.

단양 팔경 중 '도담삼봉‘은 단양읍 도담리에 있는 남한강 수면을 뚫고 솟은 세 봉우리다. 조선의 개국공신 정도전이 유년 시절을 함께해 준 벗으로 생각하고 자신의 호를 '삼봉'이라 했다고 전해진다.

단양강에 솟아 있는 바위가 여전히 그 자리를 지키고 있는 것이 신기했다. 자동연상처럼 조선시대 정도전이 정자에서 책 읽는 모습이 떠올랐다.

'도담삼봉에'에 다녀 온 흔적을 카메라에 부지런히 담은 뒤 다음 여행지로 향했다.

2017년, 단양강 물줄기 절벽에 1.2Km에 설치한 '단양 잔도 길'이다. 벼랑 위를 걸으며 암벽과 단양강 풍경을 한눈에 감상할 수 있었다.

고요한 물가엔 한 대의 모터보트가 흰 물줄기를 토하며 달려간다. 새들도 반갑다며 강 위에서 인사한다. 거리가 적당한 운치 있는 길이다.

중국 ‘장가계(張家界)’의 잔도 길을 처음 걸으며 신기함에 감탄을 했던 추억이 있는데, 이날의 단양 잔도 길의 훌륭함에 어깨가 저절로 올라가고 입 꼬리도 올라갔다.

단양강 수면 위 90m 높이의 절벽에 '만천하 스카이워크'가 보였다. 목적지까지 셔틀버스로 이동했다. 구멍이 숭숭 뚫린 철제를 밟으며 시원한 바람 따라 둥글게 정상까지 밀리듯 올라갔다.

새벽에 움직인 탓에 찾아 온 배고픔도 잊은 채 단양의 아름다운 절경과 구름 한 점 없는 새맑은 하늘을 배경으로 유리 난간에서 ‘인증 샷'을 찍을 땐 스릴만점이기도 했다.

가을이 되면 복자기 나무는 빨간 단풍나무로 으스대며 서 있을 것이다. 초여름의 초록은 언제 그랬냐 하며 잊힐 것이다. 물론 봄의 연두도 잔영에서 사라질 것이다.

겨울의 앙상함은 이 모든 세 계절의 색깔을 기억하기 어렵게 하겠지만, 단양의 절경들은 조선시대, 아니 더 먼 시대부터 그랬던 것처럼 늘 그 자리에 있을 것이다.

그게 역사며 유적이다. 또 기억이다.

March of bokjagi trees: Trip to Danyang

Danyang-gun, North Chungcheong Province, is a fabulous place to visit in early to mid-June, just before the monsoon season begins. With a picturesque scene in my mind, I embarked on the journey with excitement.

As I approached Danyang, I noticed a line of green umbrellas marching outside the car window. The tall roadside trees politely greeted the tourists, momentarily making me feel like I was in a foreign country. They are called "bokjagi trees," a type of indigenous maple trees in Danyang. Among the maple trees, they have the most beautiful and vibrant colors, globally renowned as ornamental trees.

I remember seeing trees with yellow and round objects attached to them during my trip to Italy. They were orange trees, and it was fascinating to see oranges hanging by the roadside. I once got so engrossed in taking pictures of them that I lost track of my companions.

Another memorable experience was when I heard about the blooming of black bamboo flowers once every hundred years and visited Gangneung Ojukheon in Gangwon Province. On the way to Ojukheon, the orange color caught my eye instead of the usual green. They were rows of persimmons hanging from the trees.

During this trip to Danyang, I saw beautiful bokjagi trees lining the road. It will be another unforgettable memory.

Suddenly, the tourist bus passed through the center of Danyang.

"Dodamsambong," one of Danyang's eight scenic spots, consists of three peaks that rise above the Namhangang River in Danyang-eup. It is said that Jeong Do-jeon, a prominent figure in the establishment of the Joseon Dynasty, considered these peaks as his childhood friends and named them "Sambong."

The rocks standing in the Danyang River still guard their place, which was fascinating. I imagined Jeong Do-jeon reading a book in the pavilion as if it were an automatic mental image of the Joseon Dynasty.

After capturing the traces of my visit to "Dodamsambong" diligently on my camera, I headed to the next destination. In 2017, "Danyang Jando-gil" was established along a 1.2km cliff above the Danyang River.

I could enjoy the view of the cliffs and the Danyang River at a glance while walking along the precipice. On the calm riverbank, a motorboat raced along, creating a white wake. The birds greeted happily from the river. It was a charming path with a suitable distance.

I have fond memories of walking the Jando-gil path in Zhangjiajie, China, and I was amazed. On this day, I couldn't help but raise my shoulders and drop my jaws in awe of the beauty of Danyang's Jando-gil.

I caught sight of the "Mancheonha Skywalk" on a cliff 90 meters above the surface of the Danyang River. We reached our destination by shuttle bus. Stepping on the perforated iron structure and feeling the cool breeze, I ascended to the top, going round and round as if being pushed upwards.

Despite the hunger that had come due to the early morning start, I couldn't forget the beautiful scenery of Danyang and the clear sky without a single cloud as the backdrop while taking the "certification shot" on the glass railing. It was also thrilling.

When autumn comes, the bokjagi trees will proudly display their red leaves. We will forget the green of early summer. Of course, the pale green of spring will also disappear in its shadow.

The hollowness of winter may make it difficult to remember the colors of all three seasons, but the magnificent landscapes of Danyang will always remain in their place as they have been since the Joseon Dynasty or even earlier. That is history and heritage -- and memory.
