[K-Traveler] Uganda 1: Listening to ‘I Am Calling You’ in Entebbe

엔테베 공항에서 'I Am Calling You'

내 친구 메리는 우간다에서 태어났으나 영국 런던으로 이주해 그 곳에서 자라고 교육받은 인텔리전트 여인이다. 한국인 남자와 결혼해 현재 런던에 살고 있다.

우리는 각각 서울과 런던에서 출발, 두바이 공항에서 만나 함께 우간다행 비행기를 타기로 약속했다.

그러나 약속 시간이 한참 지나도 나타나지 않는 메리부부. 띠리리~

급히 문자 메시지를 주고받았는데 런던 발 비행기가 지연돼 두바이 공항에 늦게 도착하니 나만 먼저 우간다행 비행기를 타라는 것.

대신 메리의 동생들이 ‘그 유명한’ 엔테베 공항에서 기다릴 것이니 염려 말라는 거였다. 겁쟁이인데다 길치 대왕인 나로선 상당히 모험적인 나 홀로 여행이 돼 버렸다.

아프리카~!

이 얼마나 설레게 만드는 이국 땅인가? 신미식 사진작가의 마다가스카르는 또 얼마나 아름다운가! 그렇다면 우간다에선 무엇이 나를 기다리고 있을까?

설렘 반, 두려움 반으로 우간다 엔테베 공항에 도착했다. 공항의 출국장은 매우 협소했다. 가장 먼저 시선에 들어온 사람은 군인 같은 경찰들이었는데, 그들은 옆구리에 기인~ 총을 차고 있었다.

그야말로 아주 새까만 피부에 이빨만 하얀 친구들이 무시무시한 총을 차고 있으니 괜히 두려웠다.

한참을 두리번거려도 메리 동생 같은 사내들은 보이지 않았다. 물론 메리 동생들을 한 번도 본 적이 없으므로 그들을 단번에 알아볼 순 없지만.

그럼 어떻게 찾아? 내 이름 ‘Koko’를 종이에 써서 들고 있기로 했으나, 공항 어디에도 내 이름이 보이지 않았다. 극도의 초조함.

'혹시 연락이 안 된 건가?'

한참 만에 건물 밖으로 나왔다.

공항 밖으로 나오니 마치 타임머신을 타고 우리나라 60년대로 거슬러 온 느낌이었다. 먼지 자욱한 비포장 도로와 희뿌연 회색빛 나무들, 연한 고동색 경찰복 그리고 진한 고동색 흙길.

아프리카의 첫 인상은 '기린과 얼룩말'이 아닌 바로 '회색과 고동색'이었다.

사막 아닌 사막에 나 홀로 덩그러니 튕겨 나와 오렌지색 짐 가방을 끌고…….
이건 흡사 영화 <바그다드 카페>의 첫 장면에 나오는 여주인공 야스민의 모습이 아닌가!

가수 제베타 스틸(Jevetta Steel)의 섹시한 목소리로 'I Am Calling You'를 들으며 내 마음대로 상상했던 스토리가 내 상상과는 너무 딴판이어서 화들짝 놀랐던 영화 바그다드 카페!

전혀 섹시하지 않은 영화 속 주인공 야스민은 남편으로부터 버림받은 채 사막 같은 낯선 곳에 혼자 덩그러니 남고 노래는 영화 속에 기묘하게 섞여 아련하게 흐른다.

나는 누군가를 기다리는 듯한 웅성대는 사람들 틈에서 내 이름 'Koko'가 적힌 흰 종이를 찾으려 두리번거렸다.

'만일 메리의 동생들을 만나지 못한다면 어떻게 하지? 너무 대책 없이 온 건 아닐까? 이러다가 아프리카 미아가 되는 건 아니.....ㄹ... 아니, 저게 뭣이여~?'

초조함에 바짝 침이 마르고 만일의 사태까지 걱정하던 중 사람들 틈에서 반가운 내 이름 'Koko'를 발견했다.

'메리 동생들이닷!!'

족히 20년 이상은 된 듯하고, 벗겨진 페인트칠 틈 사이로 군데군데 녹이 슨 흰색 중고 도요타 자가용 옆에 성격 좋아 보이는 브라이언과 과묵해 보이는 로버트가 내 이름 '코코(Koko)‘를 외치며 활짝 웃고 있었다.

엔테베 공항 내부엔 일반 사람들의 출입이 금지됐던 것. 그것도 모르고 공항 안에서만 사람을 찾았으니 밖에선 밖에서 대로 코코란 여자가 코빼기도 내밀지 않아 발만 동동 구르고 있었다는 걸 뒤늦게 알았다.  

애가 탄만큼 해후의 기쁨은 두 배가 되었고 우리는 가족처럼 서로를 포옹했다. 먼 길을 날아 온 내게 브라이언이 우선 물병부터 내밀었다. 로버트는 내 오렌지색 캐리어를 번쩍 들어 짐칸에 실은 후 부릉부릉 시동을 걸었다.

메리네 집으로 향하는 캄팔라 시내의 하늘 위로 제베타 스틸의 'I Am Calling You'가 흐느적흐느적 울려 퍼지는 듯했다.

생애 처음 도착한 아프리카 대륙은 그렇게 날 맞이했다. 'I Am Calling You'라는 제목처럼, ‘너를 부르네.’

Listening to ‘I Am Calling You’ in Entebbe, Uganda

My friend Mary was born in Uganda and immigrated to London where she grew up and received her education as an intelligent woman. She married a Korean man and currently lives in London.

We both left from Seoul and London, with a plan to meet at Dubai Airport and take the flight to Uganda together. However, Mary and her husband were nowhere to be found even after a considerable amount of time. Rrr… rrr…

We exchanged quick text messages, and I learned that their Dubai-bound flight was delayed, causing them to arrive late at Dubai Airport. The message advised me to go ahead and take the flight to Uganda alone.

I was told that Mary's siblings would be waiting for me at the famous Entebbe International Airport. Being a coward and notoriously bad with directions, I felt quite daring about embarking on this solo adventure.

Africa!

How exciting is this foreign land? How beautiful is Madagascar, the paradise of photographer Shin Mi-sik! What marvelous things would be there for me in Uganda?

Half excited and half afraid, I arrived at Entebbe International Airport in Uganda. The departure area of the airport was quite narrow. 

The first people I noticed were police officers who looked like soldiers, carrying rifles on their hips. It was unnerving to see these very dark-skinned individuals with only their teeth visible carrying such intimidating weapons.

Despite wandering around for a while, Mary's siblings were nowhere to be seen. Of course, I had never seen them before, so I couldn't recognize them on sight.

How would I find them? I decided to hold a piece of paper with my name "Koko," but I couldn't spot my name anywhere in the airport. I was in extreme distress.

I thought to myself, "Could it be that we lost contact?"

After a long time, I stepped outside the building.

Exiting the airport felt like traveling back in time to South Korea in the 1960s. Dusty unpaved roads, pale gray trees, light brown police uniforms, and dark brown dirt paths were the first impressions of Africa.

It felt like I was stranded in a desert that wasn't really a desert, all alone with my orange luggage, just like the protagonist Jasmin in the movie "Bagdad Cafe."

When I first listened to the sexy voice of singer Jevetta Steele, of a soundtrack from Bagdad Cafe, I imagined Jasmin to be someone who is quite the opposite of how the movie portrayed her.

In the actual movie, Jasmin, who was not sexy at all, was left alone in a strange desert-like place after being abandoned by her husband. The song strangely mixed into the movie and flowed through it in a haunting way.

Amid the bustling crowd, I anxiously searched for a white paper with my name "Koko" on it, as if I were waiting for someone.

I wondered, "What if I don't meet Mary's siblings? Did I come here so unprepared? What if I become a missing person in Africa... Wait, what do I see?"

In my anxiety, my mouth had gone dry, and I was worrying about all possible scenarios. Then I suddenly spotted my name “Koko” among the people.

"It's Mary's siblings!”

It had been at least 20 years, and they were standing next to a white, second-hand Toyota car with peeling paint, appearing friendly and reserved. Brian and Robert, with my name “Koko,” shouted and smiled broadly.

Only later I realized that families and friends are not allowed to wait inside the Entebbe International Airport for the arriving guests. Likewise, I had no idea that Mary’s siblings would be waiting me for such a long time outside the airport.

I was relieved and overjoyed, and we embraced each other like family. Brian immediately handed me a water bottle, and Robert swiftly lifted my orange suitcase and placed it in the trunk before starting the car's engine.

As we rode for Mary’s house in Kampala, Jevetta Steele's “I Am Calling You” echoed through the skies of the Ugandan capital. 

I felt so welcomed in Africa, where I set my foot for the first time in my life. The continent was calling me, just like the song’s title: "I Am Calling You."
