Hanam city government hopes to develop 'K- Star World'

SEOUL November 04 (Yonhap) -- Hanam city of Gyeonggi province will be igniting their construction plan of creating “K-star world” a melting pot of a city for hallyu culture.

According to the Hanam city government on Friday, “K-star world” project will install a dome type of K-pop concert hall, global filming site, marvel city using characters from the Marvel comic series, all located within Misa district located within Hanam city, which is only 30 minutes away from Gangnam district which is always pack with people.

Mayor of the Hanam city, Lee Hyun-jae expects to create over 3 million visitors annually, with 300 thousand new jobs and 2.5 trillion won worth of profit every year from “K-Star World.”

On top of the city government’s hope to lead Hanam to become a leading focus city of Hallyu culture through “K- star world” project by creating the city, they are willing to create more jobs, attract more people and ignite the economy to take a step further.

However, surroundings of Misa island which the “K-Star World” will be developed is currently being protected by numerous regulation such as greenbelt law, protection law of cultural heritage, and more, therefore it will not be easy for the city government to proceed with the project.

Hama City government hosted a joint event with Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee, Vice Chairperson of People Power Party Lee Yong-ho where participants can freely discuss about the topic of creating the “K-Star World.”

“Through ‘K-star world project’ we would like to lead Hanam to be the next core city of Hallyu culture,” addressed mayor Lee Hyun-jae during his opening speech while asking for support from the National assembly.

Previously in September during the small discussion with Han Duk-soo, mayor Lee Hyun-jae asked for a revision on regulations among the Misa Island.

Throughout the conference, professor Ko Jeong-min from the graduate school of business at Hongik University and Yoo Yung-sik from Sung Kyun Kwan University led the debate for 2 hours.

Professor Ko Jeong-min addressed “Hallyu culture has grown to be very competitive business item, for instance, Korean content showcased 13.9 percent increase in profit compare to its previous year,” adding “We are in need of studio facility and stadium which can accommodate numerous people,” under the topic of “Need of creating space for Hallyu Culture.”

Numerous participants actively participated in the debate related to the project “K-Star World” throughout the event.
