인제 대암산 용늪을 다녀와서

강원도 양구와 인제에 접한 1,300고지의 명산인 대암산 용늪에 다녀왔다.

대암산 정상부에 위치한 우리나라 유일의 고층습원이자 이탄습지로 세계적으로 희귀한 지형적 특징을 가지고 있어 국내 최초로 ‘람사르 협약 습지’에 등록돼 있다.

습지가 처음 생성되어진 시기는 약 4,000년 전으로 추정한다. 용늪은 기온차가 심해 하절기에는 평균기온 17℃이고, 10월부터 5월까지 영하의 기온으로 안개일수가 170일 이상으로 습기가 많은 지역이다.

습지보호를 위해 하루 150명, 1회 20명 이내의 사전예약제로 방문자를 제한한다.

‘용늪 생태학교’ 인솔자의 차량을 따라 탐방안내소까지 이동해 출입증을 발급받고 인솔자의 산행계획 및 주의사항을 경청한 뒤 산행에 나섰다.

시원한 계곡의 바람을 느끼며 오른쪽으로 작은 폭포에서 쏟아지는 물줄기를 바라보니 상쾌함이 몸속 깊숙이 파고들었다.

대암산에는 3개의 용늪이 있으나 일반에 공개되는 것은 규모가 제일 큰 용늪만 가능하다.

용늪으로 가는 숲길은 원시림에 가까워 청명한 날의 태양빛마저 숲속에 미치지 못할 정도다. 하지만 산행 내내 감싸는 청량감에 햇빛이 그리 그립지는 않았다.

용늪에 도착하니 해설사가 별도로 안내한다. 오랜 시간동안 켜켜이 쌓인 이탄층 습지의 탄생배경을 들으며 자연의 신비를 새삼 느껴본다.

용늪전망대에서 망원경으로 바라보니 저 멀리 설악산 향로봉, 금강산까지 한눈에 보이는 행운까지... “삼대가 덕을 쌓아야 볼수 있어요.”라는 재치있는 해설사의 언급이 즐겁다.

용늪을 지나면서 곳곳에 보이는 미확인 지뢰지역 푯말을 스쳐 지나간 뒤 대암산 정상의 암릉구간을 밧줄을 이용해 올랐다. 네발로 엉금엉금. 지금 생각해도 온몸이 후덜거린다.

드디어! 대암산 정상이다.

정상에서 바라보니 도솔산과 양구 펀치볼이 내 발아래 펼쳐져 있다. 정복자의 여유와 쾌감을 동시에 느끼며 대암산의 정기를 가슴에 담아본다.

하지만 정복의 쾌감이란 잠시다. 사실 자연은 정복을 허락하지 않는다. ‘자연’은 글자 그대로 ‘그저 그러한 것’일뿐이고, 그 속에 포함된 인간은 대자연을 지나갈 뿐이다.

산과 늪이 뿜어내는 기운에 흡족한 여행을 마치며 생각한다. ‘여행(旅行)’은 ‘여행(與行)’이다. 자연과 ‘함께하는’ 일이다.

Back from Yongneup of Daeamsan Mountain

I visited Yongneup Swamp of Daeamsan Mountain, a famous mountain of 1,300 highlands facing Yanggu and Inje, Gangwo Province.

The swamp is Korea's only high moor and peat wetland located at the top of Daeamsan Mountain, one of the world's rarest geographical features. It was deemed the first Korean registration to the “Ramsar Convention Wetland.”

The wetland was formed about 4,000 years ago, scholars say. Yongneup Swamp is a humid area with an average temperature of 17°C in summer because of the severe temperature difference. The number of fog days is more than 170 days a year due to the subzero temperature from October to May.

In order to protect the area, visitors are limited to 150 people a day and no more than 20 people at a time under the state-run reservation system.

Following the guide from “Yongneup Swamp Ecology School” to the information center, I obtained a pass. Then I listened to the guide’s hiking plan and precautions and started hiking.

Feeling the cool breeze of the valley, I looked at the stream of water pouring from the small waterfall to the right, and enjoyed the fresh air penetrating deep into my body.

There are total of three Yongneup swamps in Daeamsan Mountain, but only the largest is open to the public.

The forest road to Yongneup Swamp is more like a primeval forest, so even the sunlight on a clear day does not reach the forest. However, I didn't miss the sunlight because of the refreshing feeling that surrounds me throughout the hike.

When I arrived at Yongneup Swamp, a commentator guided me separately. Listening to the background of the birth of peat-layer wetland that had been accumulated for a long time, I could feel the wonder of nature.

Looking through the telescope from the Yongneup Swamp Observatory, I was lucky to see Seoraksan Mountain and Geumgang Mountain all at a glance. The witty commentator’s comment, "Three generations need to build virtue to see this," made me feel happy.

After passing through the signs of the unidentified mine area everywhere as I walked pass by the Yongneup Swamp, I climbed the rocky section at the top of Daeamsan Mountain using a rope. Even now, my whole body is shaking just by remembering that moment.

Finally! I reached the top of Daeamsan Mountain.

Looking at it from the top, Dosolsan Mountain and Yanggu Punchball were spread out under my feet. Feeling the relaxation and pleasure of the conqueror at the same time, I captured the spirit of Daeamsan Mountain in my heart.

However, the pleasure of conquest is just for a moment. In fact, nature does not allow conquest. Nature is literally just nature itself, in which humans are only passing through the Mother Nature.

By the time I finished my trip, I was gladly replenished with the energy emitted by the mountains and swamps. That's when I thought to my self: "Travel is all about being together -- being together with the nature."
