자연 속 나만의 아지트 - 캠핑

번잡하고 분주한 평상시 삶으로부터 멀리 떨어져 하늘, 별, 달, 불꽃, 물소리 등을 친구삼아 지친 나를 위로하며 힘을 얻는 동반.

‘캠핑’이 갖는 절대적인 매력이다.

더위가 한풀 꺾인 늦여름 어느 날 경기도 포천에 새로 생긴 캠핑장을 찾았다.

경치가 좋거나 인근에 즐길 거리가 많은 곳은 아니었지만, 개인 화장실과 샤워실, 엄격한 이용 조건 등 프라이버시를 최우선시해서 자연 속에서 조용한 휴식을 추구하는 캠퍼들 사이에 입소문을 탄 캠핑장 체인이었다.

이용 조건은 까다롭다.

1인 혹은 2인만 예약 가능, 지인들끼리 사이트를 두세 개 예약해서 모임을 갖는 게 확인되면 퇴출, 오후 10시 소등 및 소음 금지 등.

주인장은 정한 규칙을 철저하게 지킨다고 한다.

“내 돈 내고 와서 즐기는데 무슨 제약이 이리 많냐”, “배가 불렀나 보다”, “어디 잘 되나 보자”, 라고 발걸음을 돌린 캠퍼들도 있지만 오히려 그런 점이 소음, 빛 공해 등으로부터 해방시켜 준다.

멀리 떨어져 오롯이 자연 속에서 제대로 된 쉼을 추구하는 캠퍼들에게 더없는 보금자리다.

최근 수년간 특히 코로나 영향으로 국내 캠핑인구는 기하급수적으로 늘었다. 부작용도 커졌다. 많은 캠퍼들이 처음부터 끊임없이 고기 구워 먹기, 밤늦게까지 불 피우고 블루투스 스피커로 노래 듣기, 평소 못 다한 수다 떨기, 대형스크린으로 영화보기 등 유흥을 주목적으로 생각한다는 것이다.

파티와 캠핑을 혼동하는 것이다.

목적이 이러하니 많은 이들이 더 넓은 면적을 차지해서 남보다 더 큰 텐트를 치고 각종 집기로 안을 채워서 가능한 한 폼 나게 지내려고 한다. 짐이 많아지니 자연히 차도 큰 것으로 바꿔야 하고, 지난 번 기죽게 했던 옆 텐트보다 더 우쭐대려면 더 비싼 용품으로 갈아타야 하는 등 자연에서의 소박한 휴식 추구가 개미지옥으로 바뀌었다. 주객이 전도됐다.

나름 미니멀리즘을 추구한다고 생각했지만, 나의 텐트는 침상과 테이블, 의자, 아이스박스 등이 들어가고도 남는 크기가 아닌가? 주변을 둘러보니 본인 몸 하나 간신히 누일 정도로 앙증맞은 텐트와 작은 의자 하나씩만 보이는 캠퍼들이 대부분이었다.

이런 사람들이 진정 캠핑 마니아이며 자연을 사랑하는 지구인들이 아닐까? 얼마 전까지도 기분 좋게 느껴졌던 나의 큰 텐트가 부끄러워진 순간이었다.

여유롭게 커피가 있는 저녁식사를 즐기고, 분홍빛 석양에 이어 회색빛으로 푸르스름한 하늘에 잠시 취하고, 타닥타닥 소리를 내며 춤추는 장작 불꽃이 두려우면서도 아름답다는 생각이 들었다.

밤 10시 무렵이 되자 다들 갑자기 잠에 빠진 건지, 속삭이며 대화하는 건지 약속이나 한 듯 사방이 고요해졌고, 적막함과 함께 별이 더 크고 촘촘하고 보였다.

고요한 가운데 개운한 새벽을 맞았다. 흙의 기운과 맑은 공기 덕분이었으리라. 동틀 무렵 하늘은 또 왜 그리 멋진지!

매일 맞이하는 일몰과 일출이지만 산봉우리 사이로 지고 뜨는 태양은 또 다른 풍광이었다.

새로 캠핑장사업을 시작한 주인에게 포부를 물었다.

부친께서 물려주신 야산을 예쁘게 꾸며서 본인뿐 아니라 여러 사람들이 의미 있게 사용했으면 좋겠다는 생각으로 캠핑장을 만들었으며, 단골 캠퍼들이 본인들만의 아지트로 여기기를 희망한다고 했다.

캠핑이란 ‘들판’을 뜻하는 라틴어의 ‘캄푸스’에서 유래된 ‘캠프’에서 뻗은 영단어의 동명사다. 자연과 인간이 어우러지는 유대다. 자연과 하나 되는 충만이다. 자연이라는 거대한 시스템에 작은 하나의 점이 되는 일이다.

세상사로 어려울 때, 사람들 때문에 힘들 때 언제든 찾아가 쉬면서 나 자신을 되찾는 그런 곳, 당신은 있는가?

Camping, my retreat in nature

Far away from the daily bustle, I find solace in the companionship of the sky, stars, moon, campfires, and the sound of water. Camping is absolutely alluring.

On a late summer day when the heat had finally subsided, I discovered a newly established camping site in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province.

This site did not necessarily offer spectacular views or nearby attractions. But it had high reputation among campers for excellent privacy, with individual restrooms, showers, and strict usage conditions, allowing for quiet relaxation in nature.

The rules were quite demanding: reservations are open for only 1-person or 2-person users. The place expels people who divide into smaller groups to make multiple reservations for social gatherings. Lights-out and noise restrictions are strictly enforced at 10 p.m.

The owner was known to strictly enforce these rules.

Some campers left the site, complaining, "Why so many restrictions when we are paying to enjoy ourselves?" “They are ungrateful for their success!” or “We shall see how long they last.”

Paradoxically, such rules liberated campers from noise and light pollution, providing an unparalleled refuge for those seeking genuine rest in nature.

In recent years, the camping population in South Korea has grown exponentially, especially due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this growth has come with side effects.

Many campers view camping as an opportunity for constant grilling, late-night bonfires, listening to music on Bluetooth speakers, catching up on conversations, and watching movies on large screens, treating it primarily as entertainment.

They often confuse parties with camping.

With such intentions, many campers occupy larger areas, set up bigger tents, and bring various appliances to maintain a certain lifestyle. They naturally require larger vehicles, and to outdo their neighbors, they must invest in more expensive equipment. The tail is wagging the dog.

I thought I was practicing minimalism, but looking around, my tent seemed excessively large with a bed, table, chairs, and an icebox, all leaving ample space. Looking around, I found other fellow campers with tiny tents, just big enough for one person to lie down, and small chairs. Could these be the true camping enthusiasts, the Earth-loving souls? Suddenly, I felt embarrassed by my oversized tent that had once made me so proud.

I enjoyed a leisurely dinner with coffee, marveled at the pink sunset transitioning into a grayish-blue sky, and found beauty in the crackling flames of the campfire -- even though they occasionally startled me.

Around 10 p.m., everyone seemed to have either fallen asleep or engaged in hushed conversations. The surroundings became serene, and the stars shone brighter and closer in the silence.

In the peaceful silence, I greeted a refreshing dawn. It must have been the energy of the earth and the pure air. Why does the sky look so magnificent at dawn, even though I witness sunrise and sunset every day? The sun rising and setting between mountain peaks presented an entirely different spectacle.

I asked the camping site’s owner, who had recently started the camping business, about his aspirations. He said he had transformed his father's inherited mountain into this beautiful place, not only for himself but for many others to find meaning in it. He hoped that regular campers would consider it their own retreat.

The word "camping" is derived from the Latin word "campus," which means "field." It is a gerund of the English word "camp," deeply rooted in the idea of the nature and the humanity in unity. It is the fulfillment of becoming a tiny dot in the vast system of nature.

In times of worldly distress, or when life becomes challenging from human relationships, we return to this simple question: Do you have a place you can always go to, where you can relax and rediscover yourself?
