알래스카, 매력의 땅 - 1

알래스카는 우리나라에서 가장 가까운 북아메리카 대륙의 미국 땅이다. 지리적으로 한반도와 가깝기 때문에 북한이 대륙간탄도미사일로 미국을 공격할 경우 목표지역으로 설정할 수 있는 곳이기도 하다.

여기서 가깝다는 말은 비행시간이 가장 짧다는 뜻이다. 과거에는 알래스카 앵커리지 행 직항편이 있었고 뉴욕이나 워싱턴으로 가기 위해서 알래스카 앵커리지에 기착하여 급유를 받아야 했으나, 지금은 화물기만 다녀 시애틀 등에서 환승해야 한다.

결국 가까운 거리가 아니라는 뜻이지만, 여름 휴가철에는 대한항공이 전세기를 운항하므로 관심을 가져볼 만하다.

여름에 미국 서부지역으로 여행하는 사람들은 알래스카 행 대형 크루즈(cruze) 관광을 즐길 수 있다. 크루즈는 시애틀에서부터 출발하더라도 일주일 이상의 기간이 소요되므로 여유가 없는 사람들에게는 쉽지 않은 일이다.

알래스카는 북극을 접하고 있어서 동토지역이 많으며, 에스키모들이 살고 있고, 오래전에 육지였던 베링 해 지역을 거쳐 유라시아 사람들이 아메리카 대륙으로 진출한 통로이기도 하다.

알래스카에서는 경비행기를 타고 북미 최고봉인 맥킨리산 상공을 날 수 있고, 지천으로 빙하를 볼 수 있으며, 인근 바다의 얼음을 깨며 항해하는 작은 쇄빙선을 탈 수도 있고, 고래들의 군무도 볼 수 있다. 여러 리조트에서 스키를 탈 수 있으며, 바다와 산을 낀 해안코스로 끝없이 펼쳐진 도로를 달리며 자연의 경이를 체험하고, 알래스카 산 왕연어(king salmon)나 대게(king crab)로 저녁을 즐길 수도 있다.

무엇보다 여름철에는 백야를 경험할 수 있는 공원산책, 골프 등의 이벤트를 즐길 수 있고, 겨울철에는 개썰매 구경과 함께 북극광 오로라를 볼 수 있다.

과거 직업상의 이유(시애틀 총영사)로 일 년에 수차례 알래스카를 방문했던 필자는 위에 적시한 것 중 크루즈를 제외하고는 모든 경험을 해 보았지만 못한 것이 있다.

알래스카에서는 국립공원 지역에서 곰이나 늑대의 개체 수 조절을 위해 일정수의 사냥을 허락해 준다. 호기심이 돋았지만 시도해보지는 못했다. 물론 사냥을 위해서는 수백 달러를 지급하고 퍼밋(permit)을 사야한다.

알래스카를 여행하면서 가장 관심을 가질만한 일은 겨울철에 북극광 오로라(Aurora 또는 Northern Lights)를 관측하는 일이다.

'오로라'라는 이름은 새벽과 햇살의 여신 이름 아우로라에서 나왔다고 하며, 북유럽에서는 바그너의 ‘니벨룽의 반지’에 나오는 여전사인 발키리들(Valkyries)이 하늘을 날아갈 때 갑옷이 빛나는 모습이라고 여긴다고 한다.

오로라를 보기 위해 북유럽의 아이슬란드, 핀란드 등지를 방문할 수도 있지만 알래스카를 가게 되면 위에 소개한 각종 부수 이벤트를 즐길 수 있다는 점을 알아두면 좋겠다.

필자는 알래스카 제2의 도시이자 내륙의 가장 큰 도시인 페어뱅커스((Fairbanks)에서 오로라 관측소를 찾아 느긋하게 음료를 마시며 신의 영혼이 빚어낸 빛의 향연을 즐긴 적이 있다.

알래스카에서는 13개의 스키장이 있으며 5월초까지 스키를 즐길 수 있다. 필자는 한때 스키에 빠져 한국의 모든 스키장을 섭렵한 적이 있었다. 지금은 폐장된 강원도 최북단에 위치했던 알프스 스키장을 기억하는 사람은 드물 것이다.

물론 미국의 여러 주에 산재한 스키장도 찾아 다녔는데, 알래스카에서 초여름 스키를 경험해 보고 싶어 알리에스카 리조트(Alyeska Resort)를 방문하기도 했다. 스키장은 헬기로도 쉽게 접근 가능하다. 한 겨울이 아니라서 그런지 몰라도 다녀본 곳 중에서 설질(雪質)은 캐나다 뱅쿠버 인근의 휘슬러(Whistler)가 발군이다.

알래스카는 또 개썰매로 잘 알려져 있다. 너무 춥지 않은 매년 3월 초 ‘이디타로드(The Iditarod)’라고 불리는 대회가 열리는데 앵커리지에서 시작해 약 1,500㎞ 떨어진 서북쪽의 놈(Nome)이라는 작은 도시까지 경쟁을 벌인다. 약 12마리의 개가 끄는 개썰매를 타고 빠르면 9일 정도에 주파한다. 인간의 의지와 체력을 시험하는 대회로, 많은 썰매개가 희생된다고 한다.

일반인들이 3월에 여행하기는 쉽지 않기 때문에 알래스카에서는 유사한 형태의 개썰매 프로그램을 개발해 관광객들이 직접 승차해 일정 구간을 달릴 수 있도록 하고 있는데 계절에 따라 유형이 다른 것 같다.

새로운 것에 대한 도전은 언제나 흥미롭고 성취감을 안겨준다. 미지의 지역으로 향하는 여행도 그렇다.

Alaska is the closest land of the United States on the North American continent to South Korea. Geographically, due to its proximity to the Korean Peninsula, it could also be a potential target area if North Korea were to attack the United States with intercontinental ballistic missiles.

When I say close, I mean in terms of flight time. In the past, there were direct flights to Anchorage, Alaska, and one had to refuel there on the way to New York or Washington. However, now you have to take cargo flights and transfer in places like Seattle.

Ultimately, it means it's not as close as it seems, but during the summer vacation season, it's worth considering since Korean Air operates charter flights.

Those who travel to the western United States during the summer can enjoy large cruise tours to Alaska. Cruises, even when departing from Seattle, take over a week, making it challenging for those with limited time.

Alaska, being close to the Arctic, has vast terrains, inhabited by Eskimos. It also served as a route for early Eurasian expansion into the American continent through the Bering Sea region, which was land in the past.

In Alaska, you can take a small aircraft and fly over Mount McKinley, the highest peak in North America, observe glaciers from the sky, navigate small icebreakers through nearby seas, and witness whale pods. There are several resorts for skiing, and you can experience the wonders of nature by driving along endless coastal roads bordered by the sea and mountains. You can also enjoy evenings with Alaskan king salmon or king crab.

Above all, in the summer, you can experience events like park walks in the midnight sun and golfing, while in winter, you can witness the aurora borealis alongside dog sledding.

Due to my past job (South Korean consul general to Seattle), I visited Alaska multiple times a year, experiencing everything mentioned above except for the cruise.

In Alaska, they permit hunting a certain number of bears and wolves in the national park areas for population control. I was curious, but I didn't attempt it.

Of course, for hunting, you need to pay several hundred dollars and obtain a permit. One of the most captivating experiences while traveling in Alaska is observing the Northern Lights in winter.

The name 'Aurora' comes from the goddess of dawn and sunlight in Roman mythology, Aurora. In Norse mythology, the Valkyries, warrior maidens from Wagner's 'The Ring of the Nibelung,' were said to shine in the sky as they flew, which is the origin of the term in the Northern context.

While you can visit places like Iceland and Finland in Northern Europe to see the Northern Lights, keep in mind that if you visit Alaska, you can enjoy various additional activities mentioned earlier.

I have personally enjoyed the spectacle of the Northern Lights at an observatory in Fairbanks, Alaska's second-largest city and the largest inland city.

Alaska has 13 ski resorts, and skiing is possible until early May. I was once obsessed with skiing and conquered all ski resorts in Korea. People might rarely remember the Alpensia Resort, which used to be at the northernmost tip of Gangwon Province.

I also explored numerous ski resorts scattered across the United States and even visited Alyeska Resort in Alaska to experience skiing in early summer. The ski resorts are easily accessible by helicopter as well. While I can't say if it's because it wasn't winter when I visited, but among all the places I've skied, Whistler near Vancouver, Canada, had the best snow quality.

Alaska is also well-known for dog sledding. Every March, when the weather is not too cold, the 'Iditarod' race takes place. It's a competition that starts in Anchorage and goes all the way to Nome, a small city about 1,500 km away in the northwest. The race involves sleds pulled by about 12 dogs, and the fastest competitors complete it in around 9 days. It's a test of human willpower and stamina, and many sled dogs unfortunately lose their lives.

Since it's not easy for the general public to travel in March, Alaska has developed similar dog sledding programs that allow tourists to ride and cover a certain distance. The format may vary depending on the season.

Challenges of the unknown always bring excitement and a sense of accomplishment, just like traveling to unfamiliar territories.
