[K-Traveler] Baekyang Temple, Im Kwon-taek, and Nostalgia

백양사와 임권택, 그리고 향수

여행은 즐겁다. 여행에 대한 기대는 더 즐겁다.

하지만 여행 전날, 강풍을 수반한 비가 많이 온다는 기상 예보를 듣고 즐거움보다는 무거운 마음으로 잠을 청했다.

아침에 일어나 보니 비의 양이 적은 이슬비였다. 여행을 가라고 가랑비로 변했다고 생각하며 반가운 마음으로 모임 장소로 향했다.

비오는 휴일 이른 아침이지만 한 명의 지각생도 없어 관광버스는 정시에 목적지를 향해 출발했다.

버스 안에서 사진과 미술 감상에 대한 열강을 듣고, 열강 내용에 대한 퀴즈를 맞히며 선물까지 받으니 버스 안은 관광버스가 아니라 공부버스로 변신했다. 즐거운 공부!

여행 중 최고는 역시 ‘맛’이다. 금강산도 식후경이라 점심으로 쌈밥정식을 먹었다. 풍성한 음식과 반찬, 리필 서비스는 음식 맛만큼 감미로웠다.

오늘의 퀴즈!. “산이 많고 성이 많은 고장으로 왔는데 그 곳은 어디일까요? 장성입니다. 한자로 쓰면 長城이지요.”

장성하면 가장 먼저 떠오르는 곳은 백양사다. 식사 후 바로 안개비 속의 백양사로 향했다.

우산을 쓰고 문화관광해설사의 설명을 들으며 도로를 따라 백양사로 들어가니 비가 많이 내려 도로 옆의 개천 주변에는 물안개가 땅과 대기를 적시고 있었다. 물안개는 주변의 풍광을 한 편의 수묵화로 만들었다.

백양사 뒤로 보이는 검은 백학봉도 하얀 물안개로 살짝 덮여 있어 수묵화 같은 운치는 우리 일행을 마치 신선이 사는 세계로 안내하는 듯했다.

쌍계루 연못 수면에는 계곡과 갈참나무가 어우러져 투영돼 있었는데, 감탄사가 절로 나왔다. 절정의 풍경을 만들어 내는 쌍계루와 백학봉의 모습에 그저 입을 벌릴 수밖에.....

백양사 경내로 들어오며 빨간 우산, 노란우산, 초록 우산을 쓰고 기쁜 마음으로 조용히 동요를 불렀다. 가사 속 내용처럼 찢어진 우산은 없었다.^^

백양사는 산사음악회 날짜와 겹쳐 도로에는 사람과 차량들로 붐볐고, 음악회에 출연하는 가수들은 비오는 경내를 들뜬 분위기로 바꾸고 있었다.

백양사 관람을 마치고 임권택 씨네마 테크로 향했다. 장성이 낳은 영화계 거장 임권택 감독의 삶과 작품세계를 조명하고 그의 업적을 기리기 위해 조성된 곳으로 상영관, 전시실 등이 있었다. 임 감독이 장성출신인 것을 처음 알았다.

임권택 씨네마테크 옆에 있는 장성호 문화예술공원으로 갔다. 전국 최초의 시·서·화 ·어록을 주제로 한 문화예술공원이다. 103점의 야외 조각 작품들을 산책하며 파노라마처럼 펼쳐진 작품들을 감상할 수 있었다.

공원 내 전망대로 올랐다. 문화 해설사는 장성도 예외 없이 고령화 저출산으로 인구가 점점 줄어 이제는 45,000명 정도에 불과하다고 전했다. 풍경과는 다른 우울한 소식이다.

이젠 농촌도 나라에서 투자를 많이 하기에 퇴직 후 이모작으로 귀농해도 좋고 젊은이가 정착하는 경우엔 많은 지원을 받을 수 있다고 해설사는 말했다.

물질적인 문제를 떠나 도시인들은 나이가 들면 어쩔 수 없이 어린 시절 보냈던 시골을 떠올리는 경우가 많다. 그건 그리움이다. 자신을 성장시킨 자연과 추억에 대한 반추다.

Traveling is fun. The anticipation of traveling excites me even more.

The night before the trip, the weather forecast predicted heavy rain accompanied by strong winds. Therefore, instead of excitement, I went to bed with a heavy heart.

When I woke up in the morning, it turned out that the rain was just a light drizzle. I thought of the rain as a light shower inviting us to go on the trip, and I happily headed to the meeting point.

Despite being an early rainy morning on a holiday, nobody was late on site, and the tour bus departed on time towards ours destination.

Throughout our bus ride, we listened to lectures on photography and art appreciation, participated in quizzes about the contents of the lecture, and some even received gifts.

The atmosphere inside the bus transformed into more of a study bus than a sightseeing bus. It was enjoyable learning!

The highlight of any trip is undoubtedly the "taste." So, for lunch, we had ssambapjeongsik (a traditional Korean meal with rice and various side dishes) to fill up our hungry stomachs. The abundant food, side dishes, and refill service were as delightful as the taste of the food itself.

Today's quiz! I came to a place with many mountains and castles. Where is it? It's Jangseong. In Chinese characters, it's written as "長城.”

When you think of Jangseong, the first place that comes to mind is Baekyang Temple. After the meal, we headed directly to Baekyang Temple through the misty rain.

We used umbrellas and listened to the explanations from the cultural tour guide as we walked along the road and entered Baekyang Temple. The heavy rain made the surrounding streams and the atmosphere shrouded in mist. The mist turned the scenery into a beautiful ink painting.

The black Baekhakbong Mountain behind Baekyang Temple was lightly covered with white mist, as if guiding us into a world of divine immortals.

The reflection of the valley and the tall Chinese parasol trees on the surface of the Ssanggye-ru Pond was breathtaking.

The sight of Ssanggye-ru and Baekhakbong Mountain creating a picturesque landscape left us speechless.

As we entered the Baekyang Temple, we put on red, yellow, and green umbrellas and quietly sang a song. There were no torn umbrellas, just as the lyrics of the song described (lol).

Baekyang Temple coincided with the day of a traditional music concert, so the road was bustling with people and vehicles, and the singers performing in the concert were creating an excited atmosphere despite the rain.

After visiting Baekyang Temple, we headed to Im Kwon-taek Cinema Tech. It was a place dedicated to shedding light on the life and works of Im Kwon-taek, a master of the Korean film industry and to honor his achievements. There were screening rooms and exhibition halls. I didn't know that Director Im was from Jangseong.

Next to Im Kwon-taek Cinema Tech was Jangseongho Cultural Arts Park. It was the first cultural arts park in the country themed around poetry, calligraphy, painting, and music. We strolled through the park, admiring 103 of the outdoor sculptures that unfolded like a panorama.

We climbed up to the observatory in the park. The cultural tour guide informed us that Jangseong's population had gradually decreased due to an aging population and low birth rate, and now it was only about 45,000 people. It is a different, somber news compared to the scenery.

Nowadays, the government invests a lot in rural areas, so it's good to return to farming after retirement or receive significant support when young people settle down, the tour guide said.

Setting aside materialistic concerns, city dwellers often find themselves reminiscing about the countryside where they spent their childhood as they grow older. It is nostalgia, a reflection on the nature and memories that shaped oneself.

Thanks to that, we recited the poem "Nostalgia" by Jeong Ji-yong, the poet.

To the eastern end of the wide field

Saekgaecheon stream curves away mumbling old stories

A spotted white cow

Utters a lazy, golden cry in the sun's glow

That place is one that dreams can never forget.
