SEOUL, November 6 (Yonhap) -- Autumn reached the sea as well in early November.
Fishermen in Goseong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, lose track of time while harvesting scallops, a marine product that is in season in the fall and winter.
Cultivated scallops, which are grown every year from October to March, are representative marine products of Goseong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do.
Seventy percent of the nation's farmed scallops are produced here.
Scallops are mainly farmed in Jaran Bay, a clean sea area recognized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Jaran Bay is suitable for scallop growth because it has abundant nutrients in the water.
Many fishermen in Goseong used to farm oysters in Jaran Bay, but many of them recently switched to scallop farming.
Aquacultured scallops are hung on buoys and grow in a long net hanging in the sea.
Scallops eat nutritional salts and grow on their own when the seed is put in a long net divided into compartments like apartments.
Aquacultured scallops do not need the removal of sediments as they do not grow in sand.
The recipe to cook scallops is simple.
If you steam fresh scallops or grill cheese on top of scallops, the smell of the sea overflows in your mouth.
Leftover scallops can be added to noodles if you have leftovers after eating them steamed or grilled.
Goseong-gun used to hold a scallop seafood festival every year at this time of the year to expand consumption of scallops in season.
Goseong-gun was scheduled to hold a scallop seafood festival at Nampo Port in Goseong-eup on November 4-6, which was skipped for two years due to COVID-19.
However, the county canceled the scallop seafood festival to mourn the victims of the Itaewon tragedy.
Instead, Goseong-gun will focus on selling scallops online, such as through E-Dino Mall.
Ko Joon-sung, head of the Goseong County Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, said, "This year's scallop harvest was successful," adding, "It's a pity that the festival was canceled, but we'll let many people taste Goseong scallops through online sales."
