[K-Traveler] When things start to look different, the journey has begun

네팔에 온 지 사흘 째. 나는 아직 내가 생각했던 히말라야를 만나지 못하고 있었다. 공항에서 우리를 보던 호기심에 가득 찬 눈동자들에 놀란 이후론 공해와 먼지, 심한 교통 체증이 반복되었다.

 

본격적인 산행을 위해 포카라에서 힐레로 이동하는 비포장도로도 마찬가지였다. 덜컹이는 도로는 나를 일상으로부터 빠르게 격리시키고 있었지만, 미디어에서 보았던 만년설 덮힌 산은 없었다.

 

미약한 두통이 생기기 시작했다. 히말라야는 쉽지 않은 도입부를 제시하며 나의 사기(士氣)를 시험하고 있었다.

 

4시간 주행으로 지쳐갈 때쯤 힐레에 도착했다. 힐레는 이번 트레킹의 첫 코스인 울레리(Uleri) 협곡을 시작하는 출발점이다. 일정은 티케둥가(Tikheddungga)를 거쳐 롯지(Lodge, 숙소)에 도착하면 끝난다.

 

800 미터를 4시간 안에 올라야 하는 가파른 등정이 바로 시작됐다. 지루한 접근과 본격적인 등정이 마치 오페리‘시인과 농부’서곡 같았다.

▲ 사진을 찍어달라고 몇 번이고 청하던 네팔인. 받을 수 있는 것도 아닌데, 왜 그렇게 간절히 청했을까. 나에게 아름다운 네팔인의 축복을 남겨주고 싶었던 것일까. 이 사진을 볼 때마다 눈빛에 마음이 따뜻하다. 다시 찾는다면 꼭 주고 싶다.

 

가파른 협곡은 경사도를 제외하고는 한국의 산과 비슷했다. 하루 일정이 끝나갈 무렵 히운출리(Hiunchuli, 7,246m)가 보이는 마을에 숙소를 잡았다. 히운출리는 내가 근거리에서 본 첫 7천 미터 급 산이었지만 협곡 사이 빠꿈이 나온 정상부는 놀라운 풍경은 아니었다.

핑크 색 Four Season Lodge

우리 롯지(숙소)는 온통 핑크색이었다. 울레리 계곡 산등성이에 자리 잡은 핑크색 롯지는 정상부만 인색하게 보여주고 있는 히운출리보다 더 눈에 띄었다. 처음으로 묵게 되는 롯지와 네팔식 식사가 기대됐다.

 

히말라야 롯지는 서구적인 구조가 일반적이다. 규모도 수십 명이 지낼 수 있는 정도이고 깨끗하다. 골목길도 잘 정돈되고 깨끗했다. 오가는 나귀들이 눈 똥이 처음에는 거슬렸지만 금세 돌 틈 풀처럼 익숙해졌다.

 

국가 정책인지, 네팔인들 특성인지 여기저기에 꽃이 많이 보였는데, 특히 롯지에는 꽃 화분이 꼭 있었다. 사무엘이 네팔인들은 집 앞을 깨끗이 치우면 좋은 일이 온다고 믿는다고 했다. 그들의 믿음이 멋지다.

  

숙소인 ‘포 시즌 롯지‘에는 유독 꽃 화분이 많았다. 마침 한 여인이 화분에 물을 주고 있었다. 고봉에 둘러싸인 핑크색 롯지에서 스무 개도 넘는 화분에 꽃을 키우는 여인, 그녀가 롯지 주인 미나였다.

 

꽃들은 미나가 가장 중요하게 챙기는 손님 같았다.“꽃이 예뻐요.” 평범한 인사가 미나와의 대화를 열어준다.

미나는 네팔 억양이 들어간 영어로 말했다. 즐거운 뮤지컬 네러티브처럼 들리는 목소리는 핑크색 롯지에 잘 어울렸다.

 

“미나는 밥을 서두르지만 꽃에 물을 줘요. 물을 주는 시간은 꼭 지켜야 해요. 꽃들은 내가 돌보지 않으면 곧 시들어 버린답니다. 2,147m 핑크빛 로지에 지금은 3가지 메리골드와 코스모스가 한창이에요. 미나는 핑크를 아주 좋아해요. 핑크는 꽃처럼 아름다운 색. 미나의 로지는 그래서 문도, 벽도 내부도 모두 핑크빛이지요. 저녁을 시켜야 해요. 저녁을 차리는데 시간이 많이 걸리기 때문이지요. 미나는 할 일이 많아요. 그래서 미리미리 계획을 세우죠. 임박해서 서두르는 것을 좋아하지 않아요.”

 

 

3시 50분.

가이드는 빨리 저녁을 시키라고 종용한다. 네팔에서 ‘빨리 빨리’는 미덕이 아니다. 미리 주문을 하고 기다려야 한다. 오래전 직장 동료가 들려준 체험담이 생각났다.

 

직장동료는 히말라야 여행 중이었다. 어느 롯지에서 한 시간이 넘도록 밥이 나오지 않았다. 배가 고팠기에 주인에게 서둘러 줄 것을 독촉했단다. 돌아온 답변은 대략 이러했다.

 

“나는 당신이 시킨 식사를 준비하고 있다. 단지 당신보다 먼저 시킨 사람들 때문에 오래 걸리는 것이다. 다른 사람 대신 당신에게 먼저 줄 수는 없다. 음식은 재촉한다고 더 빨리 만들어지지도 않고, 재촉하지 않아도 때가 되면 나올 것이다. 그런데 왜, 재촉하는가.”

 

4시 30분 – 히말라야에서 한 첫 샤워

샤워를 한다. 2,147m 로지에서 하는 샤워는 따뜻하다. 샤워는 10분 정도 안에 끝내 달라고 요청 받는다.

 

집에서처럼 샤워를 하면서 듣는 음악은 없다. 음악이 없으니, 물이 더 따뜻하다. 찬바람을 피해가며 서두르느라 샤워에 더욱 집중한다.

 

뜨거운 물이 몸을 따라 흐르는 느낌이 생생하다. 몸에서 오르는 수증기로 안개 속에서 샤워를 하는 것 같다. 몸을 간지럽힌다. 경직된 근육과 피로가 풀어지고 부드러워진다. 

 

'샤워가 이런 것이었나?'

 

헤어 드라이어기가 없었지만, 산바람이 머리를 말려준다. 머릿속 깊숙이 히말라야의 시원한 바람이 느껴진다.

 

부족함은 이미 나에게 모든 것이 주어져 있음을 일깨운다.

한 가지가 부족할 때마다, 다른 것이 빈자리를 메워준다. 부족함은 불편함이 아니라, 이미 주어져 있던 것들을 일깨운다. 풍족함이 만족을 고갈시킨 것이 아닐까 생각해 본다. 작은 것들이 보이고 느껴지기 시작한다.

 

5시 25분

“의자에 기대 잠시 졸다 꿈을 꿨어요. 기억은 안 나지만 아주 기분 좋은 꿈이었어요. 밥 타는 냄새에 꿈을 깨요. 와우. 난 어디 있는 건가요. 어린 시절 살던 집이었던 것 같아요. 그러나 고개를 돌리면 우리가 올라온 길의 시작이 보이지도 않는 깊고 가파른 계곡이 보여요. 나는 2천 미터 산 위 핑크색 롯지에 있어요. 내일은 저 고개를 넘어 고래파니로 가요. 그곳에선 안나푸르나 사우스를 볼 수 있다고 해요.”

식사가 끝났다. 일찍 잠자리를 준비하느라 분주히 오가는 사람들. 들뜬 여행객들은 잠자리를 미루며 히말라야의 첫 밤을 나눈다. 그들 웃음소리가 핑크색 롯지를 밝힌다.

 

그 위로 덕다운 이불처럼 어둠이 내린다. 넓은 어둠의 공터에 성급한 별들이 쏟아져 나온다. 트레커들은 오늘 저녁 어떤 꿈을 꿀까. 울레리 산등성이에는 어둠 속에서도 핑크색으로 빛나는 포 시즌 롯지가 있다.

 

 

 

When things start to look different, the journey has begun

Three days into Nepal, I still had not encountered the Himalayas that I had originally envisioned.

 

Local crowd’s curious eyes quite scared me at the airport, and since then, my experience has been marked by pollution, dust, and severe traffic congestion.

 

Trekking the unpaved road from Pokhara to Hile was no different.

 

The bumpy road quickly isolated me from the daily norms, but the perpetual snow-covered mountains seen in the media were nowhere to be found. Slight headache began to set in.

 

The Himalayas were testing my morale with a challenging introduction.

 

After a tiring four-hour drive, we reached Hile. Hile serves as the starting point for the trek into the Ulleri Gorge, the first quest of this journey. The plan is to finish at the lodge in Tikhedhunga after passing through Tikhedhunga.

 

The strenuous climb began with ascending a steep 800-meter trail for four hours. The monotonous approach and the actual climb felt like the opening movement of an opera, a symphony of poet and farmer.

▲ Why did they ask so earnestly, what would it mean to them? Perhaps they wanted to grant me the blessing of beautiful Nepalis. Every time I look at this photo, my heart warms.

 

If I visit Nepal again, I definitely want to give something in return.

 

The steep gorge, apart from the slope, resembled Korean mountains. We booked accommodation in a village where Hiunchuli (7,246 meters) became visible as the day's trek was coming to an end.

 

Hiunchuli was my first view of a 7,000-meter peak up close, but the non-glacial summit didn't present a spectacular view amidst the gorge.

Pink-colored Four Season Lodge 

Our lodge was entirely pink. The pink lodge nestled in the Ulleri Gorge mountain range was more conspicuous than Hiunchuli, which was visible from the summit. I looked forward to my first stay in a lodge and Nepali cuisine.

 

Himalayan lodges generally have a Western structure. They are clean, and can accommodate dozens of people. Even the alleys were well-maintained and clean.

 

Initially, the sight of mule droppings bothered me, but soon they became as familiar as the grass between the rocks.

 

Whether it's a national policy or a Nepali characteristic, flowers were abounding everywhere, especially flower pots in lodges.

 

Samuel mentioned that Nepalis believe cleaning the area in front of the house brings good luck. Their faith is admirable.

 

The "Four Season Lodge" had an unusually large number of flower pots. A woman was watering the flowers. In a pink lodge surrounded by high peaks, Mina, the owner of the lodge, was taking care of the flowers.

 

The flowers seemed to be the most important guests for Mina. I said, "The flowers are beautiful." The simple greeting opened up a conversation with Mina.

Mina spoke in English with a Nepali accent. Her voice, like an enjoyable musical narrative, suited the pink lodge well.

 

"Mina rushes to serve food, but she also waters the flowers. Watering time must be strictly adhered to. If I don't take care of the flowers, they will wither soon.

 

“At 2,147-meter altitude, the pink lodge currently has three varieties of marigold and cosmos in full bloom. Mina really likes pink. Pink is a beautiful color like flowers. So, Mina's lodge is entirely pink, inside and out.

 

“You have to order dinner. It takes a long time to prepare dinner because Mina has a lot to do. That's why Mina plans ahead. She doesn't like to rush things at the last minute."

 

 

3:50 p.m.

The guide urges to order dinner quickly. In Nepal, “hurry up” is not a virtue. You have to order in advance and wait.

 

I remembered an experience shared by a former colleague a long time ago. He was traveling in the Himalayas. At one lodge, the food took over an hour to arrive. Impatient due to hunger, he urged the owner to hurry up. The reply was something like this:

 

"I am preparing the meal you ordered. It just takes longer because of people who ordered before you. I can't give it to you before others. Urgency doesn't make the food cook faster, and whether you rush or not, it will come out when it's ready. But why are you in such a hurry?"

 

4:30 p.m. - First shower in the Himalayas

I take a shower. The shower at the 2,147-meter lodge is warm. I am asked to finish the shower in about 10 minutes. There is no music playing like at home. Without music, the water feels warmer.

 

Rushing to avoid the cold wind, I focus more on the shower. The feeling of hot water flowing along the body is vivid. Showering feels like being in a mist, with steam rising from the body. It tickles the skin. The stiff muscles and fatigue loosen, and the body becomes soft.

 

“Was taking a shower always this good?”

 

Although there was no hairdryer, the mountain breeze dried my hair. Deep in my mind, I feel the cool breeze of the Himalayas.

 

In inadequacy, I am reminded that everything has already been given to me.

 

Each time one thing is lacking, something else fills the void. Inadequacy is not discomfort but a reminder of what was already given. I wonder if abundance hasn't depleted satisfaction. Small things start to be seen and felt.

 

5:25 p.m.

"I leaned against the chair for a moment and dozed off. I had a dream, although I can't remember it, it was a very pleasant dream. The smell of cooking woke me up from the dream. Wow. Where am I? It felt like the house I lived in during my childhood.

 

“However, when I turn my head, I see a deep and steep valley. I can’t see where we started off. I am in a pink lodge at 2,000 meters on a mountain. Tomorrow, we'll cross that hill to Ghorapani. From there, you can see Annapurna and South."

Dinner is over. People are bustling around, ready for an early bedtime. Excited travelers postpone their betime, sharing their first night in the Himalayas. Their laughter illuminates the pink lodge.

 

As darkness descends like a comforting quilt, starts are quick to pour down on the vast dark field. Trekkers ponder what dreams the Himalayan night will bring. Amid the Ulleri mountain range, the Four Season Lodge shines in pink, even in the darkness.
