SEOUL, Sep. 14 (Yonhap) -- Violist Shin Kyung-sik (23) has won 1st place for viola in “the 28th Johannes Brahms Competition” held in Poertschach Austria.
Shin will receive 3,000 euro (about 4.15 million won) having won the finals with “Violakonzert, op. posth., 1. Satz” of B. Bartók, according to Kumho Cultural Foundation Tuesday. The 3rd place for viola was awarded to Jang Yun-ji.
The 1st place winner debuted in Kumho Young Artist Concert in 2018 and has won in various competitions including those held by Korean Chamber Orchestra, The Korea Herald, Classical Music Magazine and The Music Education News.
Having graduated College of Music of Seoul National University, he is studying for Soloist Master in Berlin University of the Arts under Hartmut Rohde.
The International Brahms Competition which started in 1993 opens in 6 parts including piano, violin, cello, voice and chamber music. This year it has held contests for viola, cello, voice and chamber music and closed on the 12th (local time).
Korean winners of the competition were Rhee Yoon-soo (2008·piano 1st-place tie), Lee Hwa-yoon (2010·viola 1st-place tie), Kim Kang-un (2011·piano 1st-place tie), Choi Ha-young (2011·cello 1st-place tie), Huh Ja-kyoung (2013·cello 1st-place tie), Park Yui Duo (2016·chamber music 1st-place tie), Kim Gue-li (2016·viola 1st-place tie) and Lee Eun-bin (2017·viola 1st-place tie).
