SEOUL, October 27 (Yonhap) -- The number of visitors to Ulleungdo, Gyeongsangbuk-do has reached its peak this year.

The number of visitors to Ulleung this year was recorded at 420,000 as of October 26, exceeding the previous record of 415,180 in 2013, according to Ulleung-gun on October 26.

However, due to the sinking of MV Sewol and the MERS outbreak, the number decreased significantly to 267,010 in 2014, but gradually increased to 386,501 in 2019.

However, due to COVID-19 in 2020, the number of visitors plunged to 176,151, but it recovered to 271,901 in 2021.

This year, the number of tourists visiting Ulleungdo Island has significantly increased as social distancing caused by COVID-19 has been eased.

Another reason for the increase in tourists is the increased options for various passenger ships.

Ulleung-gun held an event at Sadong Port to provide Ulleung Love Gift vouchers, a set of local specialties, and passenger ship boarding passes to 420,000 visitors this year.

Ulleung-gun is running the "Winter Kingdom Ulleung Life for a Week" program to attract tourists even during winter, which has been the off-season for tourism, and is planning a festival event based on winter snow.
