[‘한국의 갈라파고스’ 굴업도를 다녀오다]

2년 전 페이스 북 한 친구의 글을 보고 기회 있을 때마다 두드려왔던 굴업도 배편 스케줄에 도전했다.

여행이란 가고 싶다고 언제든 갈 수 있는 곳이 아닌데, 특히 섬 여행은 더 그렇다.

인천 여객 터미널에서 오전 8시 출항하는 쾌속선으로 덕적도를 거쳐 굴업도 행 ‘나래호’에 올랐다. 탑승 시간은 2시간30분.

굴업도에 도착하니 마을 이장님이 1톤 트럭을 몰고 와서 우리 일행을 기다리고 있었다.

트럭에는 사람 반 배낭 반. 다리도 펼 수 없을 정도로 짐짝 취급당해 당황하긴 했지만, 이 또한 추억이라 생각하니 기분은 금세 풀렸다.

이장님 댁에 정갈하게 차려진 밥상은 고급 한정식 메뉴 이상이었다. 깊은 풍미와 엄마의 손맛이 느껴질 만큼이었다. 이후의 매끼 식사도 완벽했다

식사 후 임도길을 지나 숲길과 해변길을 따라 연평산과 덕물산을 올랐다. 난이도가 있긴 했지만 안 왔으면 후회될 만큼 감동이 있었다.

정상석에 올라보니 굴업도의 풍광과 모래사구, 그리고 주상절리 같은 해안지형에 코끼리 바위 등 시간의 역사가 고스란히 우리를 맞이했다.

하산길엔 목기미 해변길을 따라 걸었다. 예전 이곳에 생활했던 사람들의 쓰레기와 해양 오물들이 곳곳에 널려 있어 그 흉물스러움에 이내 씁쓸한 기분이 들었다.

굴업도 해변의 밤바람과 공기 그리고 발끝에서 느껴지는 기분 좋은 차가운 촉감은 여행의 진정한 의미를 느끼게 해주었던 나만의 시간이었다. 그건 나를 찾는 시간이었다. 나를 돌아보는 시간이었다.

이튿날 일출을 보기위해 이른 새벽부터 나섰지만 날씨 탓에 일출은 보지 못했다. 자연은 그렇게 쉽게 사람을 맞지 않는 것 같다.

몇 가구 살지 않는 동네 마을 순례로 대신하고 백패킹 성지인 개머리 언덕으로 향했다

억새가 이어지는 능선길이 오름 같은 느낌이었다. 감탄을 멈추기 어려운 바다 전망은 물론 간간히 뛰어 노는 사슴들의 모습들, 해풍을 맞고 자라는 소사나무 등은 ‘이색적’임을 넘어 ‘사색적’이기도 했다.

언어의 한계가 느껴진다. 다만 ‘이보다 더 좋을 수는 없다’라는 표현밖에는 할 수 없다.

연평산, 덕물산, 목기미 해변, 큰말해변 그리고 개머리 언덕에서의 행복 했던 1박 2일의 굴업도. 감동과 사유의 시간으로는 3박 4일은 보낸 듯하다.

가을에 다시 와서 백패킹 하고 싶다. 그때는 나를 다시 반갑게 맞아주려나?

안녕 굴업도! 다시 만나자 굴업도!!

'Korean Galapagos Island': Gulup Island

About two years ago, I peeked into my friends' Facebook postings and decided to challenge myself with a boat trip to Gulup Island.

It is always hard to seize the opportunity to travel . A trip to an island is even tougher.

I took a ferry at Incheon International Ferry Terminal at 8 a.m. and transferred to another ferry for Gulup Island via Deokjeok Island. The ferry trip took some two and a half hours.

Upon our arrival, the mayor of the Island was waiting for us with his 1 ton truck.

The truck was so full of passengers and their luggage that we could not even stretch our legs. I was not bothered though, thinking this shall make a part of our adventure too.

The mayor invited us to his magnificent table of all-Korean delicacies. The food reminded me of home-cooked meal from back home. In fact, all the meals in this trip were sheer perfection.

After the meal, we climbed Yeonpyeong Mountain and Deongmul Mountain along lush woods by the beach. The course was challenging but worth the sweat.

Atop the mountain, the jaw-dropping view of Gulup Island, coastal sand dunes and the elephant rock of Jusangjeolli Cliff welcomed us with dignity as grand as their history.

On our way back, we decided to detour for a promenade along Mokgimi beach. I was discomforted by piles of garbage here and there, trashed by previous dwellers.

The ocean breeze and the cold tingling in my feet let me enjoy the time of my own. It was time spent to truly understand myself and look back into my past.

On the second day, we left our lodging before the break of dawn, hoping to see the sunrise. Unfortunately, we missed out the sunrise due to the inclement weather. The nature can be picky about granting travelers of its wonders.

Instead, we decided to walk around the small village nearby and visit Gaemeori Ridge, the mecca of hikers.

The pathway to the ridge gleamed with silver grass, just like that of an oleum. I was overwhelmed by the breath-taking ocean view, not to mention a herd of idling deer and wild Korean hornbeam woods withstanding the ocean wind; the spectacle was not simply "exotic" but also "inspirational."

It was indescribable. Perhaps the best way to put it would be “couldn't be better.”

I spent two days and one night to see Gulup Island, with Yeonpyeong Mountain, Deongmul Mountain, Mokgimi beach, Keunmal beach and much more. It felt longer though, like three nights and four days, considering the ample wonders from the adventure.

I would like to visit Gulup Island once again on backpacking. Would the island welcome me just the same?

Good-bye Gulup Island ! See you again Gulup Island!
