[K-Traveler] World's 1st K-poetry recitation concert at Carnegie Hall

최초의 ‘카네기홀 시낭송 콘서트’

미국 뉴욕 카네기홀에서 세계 최초로 한국인의 시 낭송 콘서트가 한인 교포와 현지인의 관심 속에 성황리에 펼쳐졌다. 

이날 행사는 한글 창제 580주년, 한미 이민사 120년을 기념하고 우리 한글의 우수성을  세계 여러 나라에 알리기 위해 K-CULTURE로 담은 행사였다. '인류가 아름답고 행복한 그날까지‘의 기치 아래 그동안 갈고닦은 감성을 수놓았다.

K-POP 성공을 바탕으로 펼쳐진 K-시낭송은 한글과 한복의 우수성을 알리는 세계 최초의 행사로서, 전문가로 이루어진 성대한 시낭송 콘서트 무대였다.

이날 행사는 문인과 교육인, 기업인 등의 직업을 가진 한국인 시인 19명에 의해 이서윤 시인의 <사랑방 소리>와 김창회 시인의 <내가 사랑하는 사람> 등 19편의 시를 낭송하는 2시간의 무대였다.

교육자 출신인 필자는 교육 현장의 다양한 경험(전 광운중학교 교장)을 살려 애송시인인 정지용의 <향수>를 낭송해 열렬한 박수를 받았다.

카네기홀 시낭송 콘서트에 이어진 만찬에는 ‘백제 문화 지킴이’ 최예만 대표가 보내온 우리나라 전통 막걸리 ‘무령화원’이 만찬주로 올라와 화제가 됐다.

누룩 한 줌, 하늘이 내린 정수 한 말을 타서 다섯 번 빚어 만든 술이라는 ‘무령화원’은 백제 문화의 혼이 서린 귀하고 품격 높은 만찬주였다.

발효와 숙성을 거쳐 깊은 맛을 우려내는 특유한 맛과 향기는, ‘시와 술이 결합한 절묘한 어울림’이라는 평가를 받았다.

‘색면회화’를 일군 미국의 추상화가인 마크 로스코에겐 독톡한 일화가 있다. 캐나다 주류회사인 씨그램이 1958년 맨해튼에 본사 건물을 지으면서 레스토랑에 벽화를 그리기로 결정한 뒤 그에게 의뢰한 적이 있었다.

‘무령화원’엔 어떤 그림과 시가 어울릴까 고민하는 시간을 가져봤다.

만찬장을 가득 메운 외국인들은 한복에 많은 관심을 보였다. 서로 어울려 사진을 찍고 한국에서 느끼지 못한 화려한 이국의 밤을 보냈다.

분위기를 살려 바닷가재를 먹으며 만찬주 ‘무령화원’으로 건배를 외치며 피곤을 풀었다. 한복 패션으로 사진은 많이 찍었으나 밤인 데다가 어두운 조명 탓에 선명한 사진이 많지 않아 아쉬웠다.

아름다운 맨해튼의 밤은 시와 ‘무령화원’, 보슬비에 젖었다. 버스에 승차해 1시간 30분 동안 뉴저지로 이동하며 창밖을 보는 동안 ‘향수’의 한 대목이 생각났다. 

‘하늘에는 성근 별/ 알 수도 없는 모래성으로 발을 옮기고/ 서리 까마귀 우지 짖고 지나가는 초라한 지붕/ 흐릿한 불빛에 돌아앉아 도란도란거리는 곳/ 그곳이 차마 꿈엔들 잊힐리야’

‘초라한 지붕’ 대신 거대한 빌딩숲이 보였고, ‘흐릿한 불빛’보다는 네온사인의 화려한 조명이 내 눈을 밝히고 있었지만, 시에서처럼 꿈에도 잊을 수 없는 이미지가 자꾸 떠올랐다.

나이가 들수록, 멀리 있을수록, 고향과 고국은 내 몸과 내 마음에 달라붙은 꿈이며, 온갖 기억의 저장소다. 물론 그 꿈은 악몽이 아니며, 저장소는 해킹될 수 없다.

 

 

World's 1st K-poetry recitation concert at Carnegie Hall

The world's first Korean poetry recitation concert was held at Carnegie Hall in New York, drawing throngs of Korean Americans and locals.

 

The K-culture event commemorated the 580th anniversary of the creation of Hangeul, the Korean alphabet, and the 120th anniversary of the first Korean immigration to the United States. It aimed to promote the excellence of Hangeul worldwide. The event was themed "Until the day humanity becomes beautiful and happy."

 

The first-ever K-poetry recitation event took place amid the global success of K-pop, celebrating the excellence of Hangeul and hanbok, the Korean traditional outfit. The participants were experts in their respective fields.

 

The two-hour event featured 19 Korean poets who also served as writers, educators, and businessmen. They recited poems such as "Sound of Sarangbang," written by Lee Seo-yoon, and "The Person I Love," by Kim Chang-ho.

 

Thanks to my past social experiences as the principal of Gwangwoon Middle School, I received enthusiastic applause for reciting "Nostalgia" by Jeong Ji-yong.

 

During the banquet after the recitation, the Korean traditional makgeolli "Muryeong Hwawon" became the talk of the town. The Korean traditional rice wine was contributed by Choi Ye-man, the "Baekje Culture Keeper."

 

Muryeong Hwawon is a Korean traditional liquor made from a handful of yeast mixed with water that "descended from heaven" and embodies the cultural spirit of the Baekje Kingdom.

 

Its unique taste and aroma, obtained from fermentation and aging, have earned it fame as "an exquisite combination of poetic notes and alcohol."

 

Mark Rothko, an American abstract artist who created "Color Field Painting," has a unique anecdote. Seagram, a Canadian liquor company, once commissioned Mark Rothko in 1958 to paint murals for a restaurant inside the Manhattan headquarters under construction.

 

I spent some time thinking about which paintings and poems would go well with Muryeong Hwawon.

 

Foreigners who filled the dining hall showed a lot of interest in hanbok. We hung out, took pictures, and spent an unforgettable night.

 

My fatigue was cured by the merry festivity of mingling and cheering aloud with those at the dinner table. I busied myself taking pictures with the attendees in hanbok, but most of those photos turned out blurry and out of focus due to the dim lighting.

 

The mesmerizing night of Manhattan was soaked with poetry, rain, and Muryeong Hwawon. While I was on the bus to New Jersey, a segment of the poem "Nostalgia" came to my mind: 

“I moved my feet onto an unknown sand castle, looking at and loving a few stars coming out in the sky. A frost raven flew over the humble roof, croaking sorrowfully. Where, we were sitting around the dim light and whispering together peacefully. How can this place be forgotten even in a dream?”

 

Instead of a "humble roof," I saw a huge concrete jungle and colorful neon lights that caught my eyes rather than the "dim light," but I kept dreaming of the unforgettable images described in the poem.

 

 

As you grow older away from home, your hometown and motherland become closely tied to your body and heart, serving as repositories of all kinds of memories. Of course, the dreams should not turn into nightmares, and the storage cannot be hacked.
