German Bamberg Symphony to hold first concert in Korea

SEOUL, Feb. 25 (Yonhap) -- The highly renowned German orchestra “Bamberg Symphony” will perform in Korea at the Gyeonggi Art Center’s grand theater on Mar. 30 at 7:30 p.m. (KST), the Center confirmed Monday.

The Bamberg Symphony, which stands as one of the most prestigious German-based orchestras, was founded in 1946 in the city of Bamberg in the southern German state of Bavaria, mainly from German musicians expelled from Czechoslovakia after WWII, who had previously been members of the German Philharmonic Orchestra of Prague. It was home to some of the pre-eminent maestros, including Joseph Kylebert and Eugen Jochum, who served as art directors.

The upcoming performance will be helmed by Jakub Hrůša, the band’s fifth permanent conductor. As Jakub is from the Czech Republic and the Symphony has its historical roots grounded in the Czech Republic, the gig will be giving off a unique Bohemian sentiment.

The Schumann piano concerto in the first part of the concert will be played by the South Korean award-winning pianist Kim Sun-wook. Kim, who made himself known internationally by winning the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition in 2006, recently completed the European Chamber Orchestra’s Korean tour and the Seoul Philharmonic’s European tour. The pianist is expecting to join hands with the LA Philharmonic and London Symphony next year.
