[K-Traveler] New 'comma' found in Kota Kinabalu

코타키나발루에서 찾은 새로운 ‘쉼표’

코로나 사태 이후 첫 개인 여행지를 코타키나발루로 결정했다. 숙소는 ‘수트라하버 호텔’.

현지인이나 다름없는 '멈바꿋 추장', 써니의 주도 하에 이왕이면 사람들이 붐비지 않는 고즈넉한 곳으로 다녔으면 해서 그녀의 도움을 받기로 했다.

여행스케줄이란 게 범주가 거의 비슷하지만 세상에 태어나 단 한 번도 마주칠 일 없는 생경한 뭔가를 체험하는 순간 가장 짜릿하다고 믿는다.

저녁 늦게야 여장을 푼 호텔의 룸 컨디션은 기대 이상으로 깔끔하고 만족스러웠다. 창밖으로 바로 보이는 커다란 야자수 나무들이 그윽한 달빛에 취한 듯 살랑였다.

수트라하버 호텔은 정통성과 기품을 자랑하기에 걸맞은 분위기와 주변부까지도 묘한 매력이 넘쳐 굳이 외부로 이동하지 않고도 ‘호캉스’를 즐기기에 최적이다.

코타에서의 첫 일정은 바다색이 완벽한 스카이블루와 코발트빛으로 근사하게 나뉘는 파라다이스비치에서의 호핑투어였다. 인기척이라고는 우리 몇몇이 전부.

뒤이어 바다를 가르며 세 개의 섬이란 뜻인 ‘뿔라우띠가’ 해안 근처에 이르자 스노쿨링을 재도전 해보라고 한다. 그만두고 싶었지만 좀 전에 수고롭게도 바닷속에서 끝까지 나를 챙겨 준 가이드, 마이크를 믿고 다시 물속으로 풍덩 뛰어들었다.

마이크가 이끄는 대로 슬슬 몸에서 힘을 빼고 눈으로 열심히 그가 가리키는 물고기들을 바라봤다. 예쁜 니모들과 즐비한 산호초들에 마음이 뺏겨 탄성을 질렀다. 얼떨결에 삼킨 바닷물의 짠맛까지도 이내 유쾌해졌다.

쁠라우띠가는 한가하기 이를 데 없는 지상낙원이었다. 나른한 오후를 즐기기에 딱 그만인 요새 같은 그곳에서 마이크가 잡은 커다란 갑오징어를 구워 푸짐한 점심식사로 배를 채우고 나니 세상 부러울 게 없는 망중한. 내가 바랐던 바로 그 그림이었다.

다음날은 핑크 모스크나 블루 모스크를 돌아봤지만 개인적으로는 크게 와 닿지 않았다. 오히려 번외의 장소인 코콜힐 선셋이 매우 인상적이었다

꽤 높은 포토존까지 오르는 내내 안개와 습기로 앞이 거의 안 보이더니, 목표지점에 올라서자 기다렸다는 듯 장관을 이루며 일몰의 거대한 파노라마를 펼치는 모습이라니…….

대자연의 경이로움은 신을 경배하고 찬양하기 위해 만든 사원이(물론 충분히 아름답고 멋지지만) 감히 능가하지 못 할 절대적이고 강력한 뭔가의 근원이 아닐까 싶다.

반딧불이를 보기 위해 일몰 전에 도착한 멈바꿋 선셋 비치. 남중국해와 맞닿는 지점의 해안은 바닷물이 짙은 브라운 빛(황토물처럼 혼탁하지 않고)이었고, 바닷길은 맹그로브 숲으로 이어진 강 쪽으로 접어들수록 붉은색에 가까운 빛깔이 드리워져 매우 이색적인 풍광이었다.

그곳에서의 차갑지도 뜨겁지도 않은 적당한 온도의 바다 물결이 실린 맨발의 감촉은 지금까지도 잊을 수 없다.

양손 안으로 잡아보았던 반딧불이가 보석처럼 반짝 빛을 발했다. 살그머니 놓아주자 포르르 날아드는 숲 안쪽의 수많은 반딧불이들의 향연. 그와 어우러져 상큼한 바람결이 살갗을 애무했다. 그렇게 코타의 아름답고 특별한 여정은 아쉽게 끝났다.

어떤 경우 여행 동반자들끼리 서로 모나거나 합이 맞지 않아서 트러블이 있을 수도 있겠지만, 이번 여행에 함께 해준 동행들은 나의 의견들을 무난하게 만족해하며 자주 깔깔거리며 웃었다.

난 새로운 여행지가 늘어날수록 홍수처럼 넘쳐나는 행선지에 대한 고급 정보가 아니더라도 남들 따라하는 일정이나 여행기는 그만 쓰고자 늘 새로운 모색을 꿈꾼다.

이번 여정에 우리는 써니의 팔순이 넘으신 어르신과 계속 동행했다. 써니가 치매를 앓고 계신 엄마를 혼자 두며 일 할 수 없는 이유이기도 했지만, 노모는 그녀가 이끄는 여행사의 팀원인 것처럼 유연하게 잘 따라다녔다. ‘조용한 치매’라는 말이 있지 않은가?

밥벌이를 위해 여행사를 꾸려 애쓰는 써니의 생존 전략과 쉽지 않을 그녀의 효심, 그리고 먼 이국에서 홀로 자신의 어린 아들을 키우며, 그 아들을 회사의 일원으로 듬직하게 성장시켜 함께 활동하는 걸 보니 뭉클했다.

일정 내내 질적으로 고급한 여행이 되도록 애써준 써니와 그런 딸에게 맡겨졌으나 절대로 해가 되지 않으려 본능적으로 적응하는 어르신, 그녀의 아들이자 팀원인 제리, 말없이 묵묵하게 도움을 준 마이크와 그의 처남에게도 감사의 말을 전한다.

내게 ‘쉼표’였다면 그들에겐 ‘노동’이었을 그 노고에 힘찬 박수와 응원을 건넨다.

어딘가 낯선 곳을 찾고 또 어떤 잊지 못할 그 곳만의 독특한 냄새에 이끌려 기억을 되살리며 발걸음을 옮기는 일, 무엇보다 여행은 어떤 누군가의 일생을 혹은 인생을 함께 열어보며 고개를 끄덕이거나 어깨를 토닥이는 인연의 터이기도 하다.

내게 있어 '여행'은 물리적으로 옮겨가는 것이 아닌 깊이를 가늠하는 일이며, 심리적으로는 새로운 확장보다는 거나한 쉼표다.

New 'comma' found in Kota Kinabalu

I chose Kota Kinabalu as my first trip destination after COVID-19 crisis. I stayed in “Sutera Harbour Hotel.” With the help of 'Membakut chief', Sunny, I decided to visit a quiet and not very crowded place.

I personally think that it is the most thrilling moment to experience something unfamiliar that I have never encountered in the world, even though majority of times, travel schedules are mostly identical.

The hotel's room condition was beyond expectation as it was clean and I was satisfied with it. The large palm trees, which one could see right out the window, fluttered under the deep moonlight.

The Sutera Harbour Hotel is perfect for enjoying a "staycation" without having to leave the facility because it shows off the authenticity and elegance and has its own unique charm around it.

The first schedule in Kota Kinabalu was hopping tour in paradise beach where the color of the sea was in perfect mixture of sky blue and cobalt blue. There were only few people around except for the ones I traveled with.

The guide suggested us with snorkeling once again as we reached the coast of “Pulau Tiga,” which means three islands. I wanted to quit, but I jumped back into the water believing in Mike, the tour guide who took care of me inside the water a while ago.

I started to slowly relax my body as Mike told me and started to observe various fish he pointed out. I was amazed by all the beautiful Nemos and the seaweeds. Even the taste of the salty seawater I accidentally swallowed felt pleasant.

“Pulau Tiga” was a paradise on earth. After filling our stomach by feasting on big grilled squid which Mike caught at the fortress-like place that was perfect for us to enjoy a drowsy afternoon, there was nothing to envy in the world. I was living the moment that I’ve always dreamed of.

The next day, I visited the Pink Mosque and Blue Mosque, but personally, I wasn’t impressed by neither of them. Rather, the sunset witnessed from the Cocoon Hills caught me by surprise.

I couldn't see much due to the fog and humidity until I got up to the photo zone which was placed very high. When I got to the point, I was able to witness a spectacular panorama of the sunset.

I think the wonders of Mother Nature are the source of something absolute and powerful that a temple made to worship and praise God (although it is beautiful and wonderful enough, of course) will not surpass.

I arrived at Membakut beach before the sunset to see the fireflies. Color of water at the coast where it meets the South China Sea was dark brown and the sea route was exotic as it got closer to the river from the mangrove forest.

I still can’t forget the vivid feeling of touching the not so cold or hot water with my bare feet.

Fireflies that I caught with my hand sparkled like jewels. A herd of fireflies flew out of my hands as I let go of the grip. In harmony with them, the fresh wind made me feel good as it touched my skin. That’s how my beautiful and special journey in Kota Kinabalu ended.

In some cases, there may be some troubles as travel companions face conflicts within their travel agendas or in some cases they showcase great synergy. However, the companions who accompanied me throughout this journey were satisfied with my decision during trip and we laughed together often.

I tend to look for something new to segment myself from various travel journals despite of the status quo of influx on rich information regarding the destination.

On this journey, we continued to accompany Sunny's 80-year-old mother.

Sunny’s mother participated in our journey as if she was a member of the travel agency even though the reason she accompanied us was because Sunny couldn’t leave her alone at home as her mother is diagnosed with dementia.

It was touching to see Sunny's survival strategy as she set up a travel agency for a living, her actions based on her filial love toward her mother, while raising her young son alone in a distant foreign country and partnering up with her son she raised as member of the travel agency.

I would like to thank Sunny who tried so hard to provide the high-quality trip throughout our stay, the elderly who instinctively adapted to the schedule so that she would not become a hassle during the schedule, her son Jerry, Mike and his brother-in-law for making this trip memorable.

I give them a strong round of applause and support for their hard work, which would have been "labor" for them while it was a "rest” for me.

Finding a strange place and following the path with the trace of peculiar smell. Traveling can be a site of relationship where you listen and understand other’s life as you pat their shoulder.

For me, the idea of 'travel' is not a physical move, instead it is a measure of depth, while psychologically, it is a big comma rather than a new expansion.
