SEOUL, Mar. 22 (Yonhap) -- An array of participatory activities will be carried out around the Haengju Fortress, which stands as a representative tourist attraction in the city of Goyang in Gyeonggi Province, welcoming the spring.

The city is planning to hold a historic and ecological program to explore the Fortress from Apr. 8 to 9, the city announced Wednesday.

The program, under the title of “General Kwon Yul and Haengju Battle,” will explore the history of the Fortress by walking along the monument with professional commentators.

The program will kick off with the legendary tale of the Battle of Haengju, by which the Korean troop defeated the Japanese troops of 30,000 soldiers only with 2,000 soldiers during Japanese colonialism in 1592. Commentators will provide details on the strategies and tactics of General Kwon Yul who led the troops to victory, as well as the victory of the government army, monk soldiers, medical soldiers, and women against the Japanese force.

Participants will also be offered an exotic experience of making their own Singijeon, a rocket from the Joseon Dynasty.

Meanwhile, the ecological program “Salgu Flower Dishcloth” will showcase more than 60 different kinds of trees, mountain birds, and insects that can be found around the Fortress.

With the beautiful scenery of the Fortress in the background, visitors will be able to make one’s own crafts while listening to explanations from the experts.

Anyone can apply for the program by visiting the Goyang City Integrated Reservation Site. Additional reservations will also be open on weekdays for field trips of more than 20 students. The participation fee is 3,000 won per person.

For these upcoming programs, the city renovated Chunguijeong Pavilion that is situated at the top of the Fortress into an exquisite hanok (Korean traditional house) along with a resting space where one can watch related video content and join in the participatory activities.
