쉼과 충절의 고장 영월

쉼은 활력과 어울리지 않는 말이지만, 활력을 얻기 위해서는 꼭 쉼이 필요합니다.

현대인의 일상은 늘 바쁩니다. 빌딩 숲으로 들어갔다 나오기를 반복하고 다양한 사람을 설득하기 위해 애씁니다. 어떤 때는 굴종의 모습을 보여야 하고 다른 날은 털을 바짝 곤두세운 고슴도치 같은 허세를 부려야 합니다.

그 일상의 모든 몸짓과 말꼬리에는 돈이 숨어있고 권력의 잔뿌리가 뻗었습니다. 돈과 권력이 활력을 영양분으로 삼아 크는 나무라면, 지친 영혼에는 나뭇잎 살랑거리는 바람, 한여름 뙤약볕 아래 그늘과 같은 쉼이 필요합니다.

서울에서 꼬박 두 시간 반을 달려왔습니다. 영월군 북면의 해발 450미터 산비탈에 있는 민박집은 맑고 시원합니다.

모든 사물은 원근(遠近)을 무시하며 또랑또랑하고, 산세는 몇 겹인지, 몇십 겹인지 농담(濃淡)으로 구불거립니다. 눈앞 풍경이 생경합니다. 빨갛고 노랗고 보라색 꽃이 지천입니다. 외로워 보이는 노란 튤립 한 송이 옆에는 피보다 붉은 튤립 한 무더기가 흐드러져 있습니다. 형형색색의 튤립이 봉기를 앞둔 시위꾼이라도 된 듯 삼삼오오 모였습니다.

야트막한 언덕에는 수선화가 수줍게 피어오르고 형광 빛 꽃잎의 네모필라가 오순도순 다정합니다. 꽃망울이 터질 듯 수국이 부풀어 올랐고, 물방울 머금은 제비꽃과 큰개불알풀꽃, 별꽃, 앵초꽃, 각시붓꽃, 소래풀, 분홍설유화, 무스카리가 서로 자랑질입니다. 왕벚꽃나무의 꽃잎이 마당에 소복이 쌓이고 조팝나무 흰 꽃은 순수보다 더 희게 뭉쳐 보입니다.

오십 중반의 동갑내기 쥔장 부부는 십 수 년 전에 영월 깊고 높은 산으로 귀촌했습니다. 그냥 서 있기도 힘든 가파른 산비탈 7,000여 평을 두 부부는 십 년 넘도록 다듬고 있습니다. 본채를 짓고 헛간을 지었습니다.

아무리 손재주가 좋아도 부부만의 힘으로 열세 동이나 되는 건물을 지었다니 놀랍습니다. 터를 닦으며 나온 돌로 온 축대를 석벽으로 쌓고 곳곳에 나무를 심고 꽃씨를 뿌렸습니다. 사시사철 예쁜 꽃 정원 만들려고 온갖 책을 사보고 갖가지 영상으로 가드닝(Gardening)을 배웠습니다.

이래저래 입소문이 나서 숙박 손님이 오고 유명 연예인이나 외국 여행객에게는 꼭 가야 할 명소가 되었습니다. 손님방을 만들고 핀란드식 사우나도 지었습니다. 부엌에는 왔다 간 손님들이 보내준 도자기 그릇이 가득합니다. 덴마크니 스웨덴이니 영국에서 온 외국 손님들은 자기 나라 꽃씨를 보내왔습니다.

몇 해 전에는 ‘내 마음의 외갓집’이라는 이름을 달고 ‘영월 한달살기’ 손님을 맞기 시작했습니다, 벌써 2년 치나 예약이 꽉 찼습니다. 영월의 명소가 되었습니다.

햄릿의 여인 오필리어는 꽃이 흐드러진 강물에 빠져 죽었습니다. 셰익스피어는 오필리어의 죽음에 온갖 꽃을 배치했습니다. 버드나무가 하늘거리고 미나리아재비, 쐐기풀, 데이지, 제비꽃, 양귀비가 흐드러진 작은 강에 오필리어는 물이 잘 스며드는 치렁치렁한 옷을 입고 순국하듯이 진흙 속 강바닥으로 빨려들었습니다.

연이은 비극 속에서 그녀에게는 영원한 쉼이 필요했습니다. 오필리어의 죽음과 영월 산속 민박집 꽃이 겹쳐 보이는 것은 도시 삶의 번잡함과 쉼이 그토록 간절했기 때문인지 모르겠습니다.

서울로 돌아가는 길에 청령포를 들렸습니다.

청령포는 귀양 온 단종이 두 달 머문 유배소입니다. 그 덕분에 영월은 ‘충절의 고장’이라는 이름을 얻었습니다. 성삼문 등 사육신 사건을 계기로 단종은 1457년 영월에서 죽임을 당했습니다.

청령포는 동강을 만나려는 서강이 온 힘으로 달리는 끝자락에 늙은 엄마 젖꼭지처럼 애처롭게 붙은 반쪽짜리 섬입니다. 물길이 한 바퀴 휘도는 물감옥입니다.

열일곱 살 소년 단종은 하늘이 내린 이곳 물감옥에 갇혔다가 숙부 세조의 명령으로 교살됐습니다. 왕조실록 기록과 다르게 ‘장릉지’에 적힌 단종의 죽음은 오필리어의 익사보다 더 극적입니다. 사약 탕기를 손에 든 금부도사가 주저하자 단종의 시종이 공명에 눈이 멀어 활줄로 목을 졸랐고, 그 시신은 동강에 버려졌다고 합니다.

시신을 건드리는 자는 삼족을 멸한다는 왕명을 거스르고 군관 엄흥도가 시신을 수습했습니다. 엄흥도는 지금까지도 충절의 대명사로 영월에서 떠받쳐지고 있습니다.

청령포에는 수백 년 소나무들이 거북이 등딱지 같은 껍질을 내보이며 빽빽한 솔잎 사이로 햇살을 받고 있습니다. 주변 유물은 오백 년이 지난 오늘까지도 애처로운 손길에 닳고 닳아 반질반질합니다.
차로 오 분 남짓 가면 단종이 묻힌 초라한 영월장릉이 있습니다.

왕위 찬탈의 역사는 동서고금을 막론하고 예술가에게 훌륭한 영감을 줬습니다. 특히 숙질간 권력 찬탈은 도덕성과 정통성에서 어긋난 변태적 왕위 계승이기 때문입니다.

장미전쟁 와중에 잉글랜드의 리처드 3세가 조카인 에드워드 5세의 왕위를 빼앗았습니다. 이광수가 ‘단종애사’라는 소설을 썼듯이 셰익스피어는 ‘햄릿’과 ‘리처드 3세’라는 희곡으로 조카를 죽이는 찬탈의 야수성을 기록했습니다.

도심의 번잡한 생활과 치열한 돈의 쟁투에 활력이 필요하다면 쉼이 필요합니다. 그 쉼의 여정에 강원도 영월의 민박집이 있고, 애처로운 역사가 숨어있는 청령포와 장릉이 있습니다.

Home of rest and fidelity Yeongwol

Theoretically the idea of resting and energetic are very different. In order to be more energetic, however, one needs to rest.

Nowadays, people are extremely busy with their daily lives; most tend to live the repetitive life of clocking in and out of their work, trying their best to persuade others in a concrete-packed jungle. Sometimes people need to kneel down to others, and sometimes they need to play haughty in front of others like a porcupine with their quills stiffened up.

Money plays its hidden role behind every move and every word spoken during people's daily lives. Its power extends deep down to politics and power. Some say power and money feed off of one's energy to thrive. But exhausted souls need refreshing breeze and shadow to escape the scorching sun, too. 

I have driven for nearly two and a half hours from Seoul. Accommodation located within Yeongwol, on a steep slope located 450 meters above sea level is filled with clean and refreshing air. Every object defies the law of originality and is distinctive, while the mountains showcase the view of multiple layers.

The view I am faced with is very strange. Flowers in red, yellow, and purple are fully bloomed everywhere. Bunch of red tulips are surrounding a single yellow tulip. As if there is an uprising, colorful tulips have gathered around one another.

Owners of the villas are in their mid-fifties. They have moved into the dense forest within Yeongwol a couple decades ago. The couple is continuously refining over 250,000 square feet of land. Among their own accomplishment are their beautiful home and a barn on the sloped plane.

Despite of their talented woodworking abilities, it surprises me to see the couple has managed to build 13 units of villas. While plowing the land they have obtained vast amount of rocks, later used to lay the foundation of the building structures. The couple also planted various flowers and trees around the building. The owners addressed that they have learned to garden through various books, videos and more so that they can enjoy the lovely garden all year around. 

Over time, the couple’s villa has become a must-visit place for travelers, celebrities and more. The couple built Finnish sauna and various small housings where visitors could rest. In the kitchen, cabinets are filled with various plates and ceramics from visitors. Foreign visitors from England, Sweden, Denmark and more have sent various flower seeds from their countries.

Starting a few years ago, the couple started to rent out their villas to visitors under the name of “Living in Yeongwol for a month” and “Mother-in-law’s house in my heart.” The owner’s place of residence has become one of the landmarks of Yeongwol.

Ophelia, a loved one of Hamlet has died at the lake covered in flower pedals. Shakespeare has placed various flowers at the deathbed of Ophelia. The girl, in her drooping clothes, was drawn into the mud at the bottom of the lake where poppies, nettle herbs, daisies, viola odorata, willow trees and more. 

Through continuous tragedies, Ophelia needed eternal rest. The image of Ophelia’s death and the flowers at the villa in Yeongwol overlap with one another because both needed rest from the busy city lives. 

While heading back to Seoul, we decided to drop by Cheongnyeongpo Island.

Cheongnyeongpo is where King Danjong was exiled to for two months. Due to such event, Yeongwol withholds the title of “home of the fidelity.” In 1457, King Danjong was executed in Yeongwol, allegedly for seeking treason against the King Sejo.

Cheongnyeongpo is located on the tip of where Donggang River and Seogang River merge. The island served as water-lock prison due to the geographic reasons.

Seventeen-year-old Danjong was imprisoned and was later on executed by his uncle, Sejo. Unlike the recorded data within the annals of the dynasties, the death of Danjong is portrayed more horribly than Ophlia’s death within the writings at the burial mound.

When the King Danjong’s executioner hesitated to hand out the bowl of deadly poison, one of the Danjong’s attendants strangled the dethroned king with the string of a bow. After the execution, Danjong’s body was dumped into a river.

Military officer Uhm Heung-do retrieved the King Danjong's body, going against King Sejo’s direct order not to touch the body of Dangjong and whoever touches the body will be executed along with three sets of relatives; Until this very day, Uhm Heung-do is praised as the representing figure of loyalty in Yeongwol.

Pine trees within the Cheongnyeongpo Island were receiving sunlight through tight batches of leaves, armed in turtle shell like bark. Relics located within Cheongnyeongpo Island are glossy due to the visitor’s remorseful touches for the past 500 years.

Within a five-minute driving distance from Cheongnyeongpo is a burial site of King Danjong, called Yeongwol Jangneung.

The tragic history of King Danjong has provided inspirations to artists from all ages and countries. Especially the discord between an uncle and his niece is an indecent way of succession.

Via the War of the Roses, Richard III of England seized the throne of Edward V.

William Shakespeare portrayed the brutal nature of usurp through his plays “Hamlet” and “Richard III,” while South Korean writer Yi Gwang-su published “Danjong Aesa.”

For energy to survive the crowded city life, one needs to rest. For travelers seeking a place to rest, Yeongwol, Cheongnyeongpo Island and Jangneung are always waiting with open arms and hidden stories from the past.
