SEOUL, Apr. 18 (Yonhap) – The statue of Freddie Mercury, the vocal of the legendary rock band Queen and the main character of the movie “Bohemian Rhapsody,” will be set up on Jeju.

According to the officials from the committee seeking the introduction of a Freddie Mercury statue on Monday, the opening ceremony for the statue of Freddie Mercury will be held at a coastal hill in Aewol-eup, Jeju-do, on Apr. 21 at 2 p.m.

It is the second time that a Freddie Mercury statue has been set up, following the first replica in Montreux, Switzerland.

This event was successfully held with the support of the fan club members of Naver’s “We will rock you,” Daum and Kakao’s “Queen Forever,” and Paik Sun-yup, the head of the committee, which has been prepared for 8 years.

The committee explained, “At the time of Queen’s concert held in Korea in January, 2019, we met the lead guitarist Brian May and manager Phillip Simms, and the officials of Queen approved the designed model for the commemorative statue.”

The statue was designed with a structure that is resistant to sea breeze and salt, considering the features of the Jeju Coast. The statue, which is 177cm tall, represents the height of Freddie Mercury and expresses a clenched fist with one hand raised.

The committee said that Brian May offered a greeting when he looked at the statue, saying, “Korean friends are amazing and beautiful. I’m so happy that the statue will be set up on such a beautiful island in South Korea.”
