[K-Traveler] Alaska, land of enchantment - 2

알래스카, 매력의 땅 -2

알래스카는 해산물과 광물의 수출로 살아가는 지역이다. 해산물 중에는 왕연어(king salmon)와 대게(king crab)의 주산지이다. 크기와 맛이 비례하는 것은 아니지만 연어와 대게는 어디서나 고급 해산물 요리로 인기가 높다.

 

그런데 최근 바닷물 온도 상승으로 생산량이 크게 줄고 있다고 하니 시애틀, 샌프랜시스코, 로스앤젤레스 등 태평양 연안도시를 방문할 경우에는 '킹샐먼과 킹크랩 그리고 랍스터'를 실컷 맛보기 바란다. 

 

알래스카를 여름철에 가게 되면 백야(白夜)를 경험하게 된다. 북유럽이나 시베리아 등지도 마찬가지지만 밤12시가 되어도 해가 지지 않으므로 호텔마다 진한 차광막이 설치돼 있다.

 

알래스카 사람들은 백야에 다양한 이벤트를 즐긴다. 특히 한국의 중장년층에게는 하루에 골프를 세 번이나 즐길 수 있다는 데에 매력을 느끼는 사람들이 많다. 반면 겨울에는 너무 일찍 일몰이 찾아온다. 그래서 알래스카에서 겨울나기는 힘들지만 주정부는 이때 주민들에게 석유와 가스 수출로 마련한 보조금을 가구마다 수천 달러씩 지급한다.

 

실제로 알래스카 주민들의 일인당 국민소득은 8만 달러에 가깝다. 겨울철에 방문했을 때 술집이 요란했던 기억이 난다.

 

등산을 좋아하는 사람들은 6,194m의 ‘맥킨리’라고 불렸던 북미 최고봉에 대해 관심을 기울일 것이다. 이 산 발견 당시 대통령 지명자의 이름이 맥킨리였으나, 약 100년 뒤 2015년 원주민의 오랜 청원을 받아들여 원주민어로 ‘높다’는 의미를 가진 ‘디날리(Mt. Denali)’로 변경했다.

이 산에서는 디날리를 등반한 후 하산 때 조난을 당한 한국의 유명 등산가 고상돈 추도비를 만날 수 있다. 그는 한국 최초로 에베레스트를 정복해 “여기는 정상, 더 오를 곳이 없다“고 외쳤지만, 2년도 채 지나지 않아 사고를 당했다. 추모비에는 ’젊은 넋이여, 겨레의 기상을 심고 흰 상상봉에 늘 머물러라‘고 새겨져 있다.

 

경비행기를 타고 봉우리 상공을 시계방향과 반시계방향으로 여러 차례 돌면서 주변을 관광한 적이 있다. 비행기 아래로 개미처럼 줄지어 산을 오르는 등산객들을 보면서 자연의 위대함과 인간의 도전에 박수를 보냈다.

 

빅토르 위고는 그의 여러 저서에서 자연을 투쟁 또는 극복의 대상으로 묘사했지만, 자연 앞에서는 한없이 겸손해야 함을 느끼게 된다.

알래스카에는 우리 동포들이 7,000여명이나 살고 있다. 알래스카에 사는 외국인들 중에 1, 2위를 다툰다. 유학생, 회사 지사 직원 등 재외국민들도 1,000여명에 이른다.

 

알래스카를 가면 동포들이 운영하는 한국 식당에서 김치찌개를 맛보고, 한인상점에서 주얼리 제품 등을 사며, 더 시간이 있다면 한인교회를 방문해 이민 동포들의 애환을 들어보는 것도 유익한 경험이 될 것이다. 알래스카는 온난화 시대에 북극 개발에 동참하고 있는 우리에게 지정학적으로 중요한 위치에 있다는 점도 기억하자.

 

알래스카는 미 대륙에서는 가장 늦게 하루를 시작하는 곳이다. 서울 시각보다 앵커리지는 17시간이나 늦다. 알래스카로 여행을 가면 거의 하루를 번다는 뜻이다.

 

하루는 생각보다 길다. 시베리아 수용소의 이반 데니소비치(Ivan Denisovich)처럼 힘든 시간일 수도 있지만, 알래스카 여행을 하게 되면 도니체티가 작곡한 오페라 ‘연대의 딸’에서 마리를 사랑하는 토니오(Tonio)처럼 분명히 ‘오늘은 기쁜 날’을 만들 수 있다고 확신한다. 

 

물론 돌아올 때 까먹는 시간은 각자가 책임져야 할 몫이다. 어쩌면 인생의 이치 같은 일이다.

Alaska, land of enchantment - 2

Alaska is a region sustained by the export of seafood and minerals. Among the seafood, it is the primary source of king salmon and king crab. While size and taste don't always correlate, both salmon and crab are popular choices for upscale seafood dishes anywhere.

 

However, due to recent increases in ocean temperatures, the production volume has significantly decreased. So, if you happen to visit Pacific coastal cities like Seattle, San Francisco, or Los Angeles, make sure to indulge in 'king salmon, king crab, and lobster'.

 

When visiting Alaska during the summer, you'll experience the phenomenon of the midnight sun, known as "baekya (white night)" in Korean. Similar to northern European or Siberian regions, even at midnight, the sun doesn't set, leading hotels to have thick curtains to block out the light.

 

Alaskans enjoy various events during this time, and it's particularly appealing to the middle-aged population who can play golf up to three times a day. On the other hand, winters bring early sunsets. To counter this, the state government provides subsidies to residents through oil and gas exports, offering thousands of dollars per household.

 

In fact, the per capita income of Alaskan residents is close to $80,000. I remember the lively atmosphere of bars during the winter visit.

 

For those who enjoy hiking, they might take an interest in North America's highest peak, formerly known as "McKinley," towering at 6,194 meters. However, about 100 years after its discovery, it was renamed “Denali” in the indigenous language, meaning tall, following a long-standing petition from native peoples in 2015.

On this mountain, one can encounter a memorial for the well-known Korean mountaineer Go Sang-don, who tragically met his end after successfully ascending Denali. 

 

He was the first Korean to conquer Everest and famously shouted, "Here is the summit, there is no higher place." 

 

But, within two years, he faced an accident. The memorial carries the inscription, "Oh young spirit, sow the aspiration of the people and forever dwell on the white imagination peak."

 

I've had the experience of flying around the summit's airspace in a small plane, both clockwise and counterclockwise, applauding the mountaineers ascending the peaks like ants. It's a salute to the grandeur of nature and human endeavor.

While Victor Hugo often depicted nature as a realm of struggle and conquest, before nature, one feels the need for boundless humility.

 

Around 7,000 compatriots call Alaska home. Among the foreigners living there, Koreans vie for the top two spots. The community includes international students, company branch employees, and more, totaling around 1,000 expatriates.

 

When you visit Alaska, tasting kimchi stew at a Korean restaurant run by fellow Koreans, shopping for jewelry and other items at Korean stores, and if time allows, visiting a Korean church to hear the stories of immigrant compatriots, can all be enriching experiences. Remember, Alaska holds a geographical significance for us, participating in Arctic development during the era of global warming.

 

Alaska is one of the latest places to start a day on the American continent. Anchorage lags behind Seoul time by 17 hours. A trip to Alaska means almost gaining an entire day.

A day is longer than you might think. It could be a challenging time, akin to Ivan Denisovich's experience in a Siberian prison camp, but embarking on a journey to Alaska brings the certainty that, much like Tonio, who passionately loves Mari in the opera “La fille du regiment (The Daughter of the Regiment),” you can truly make it a “happy day.”

 

Of course, managing the time forgotten when returning is a responsibility each person must bear. Perhaps it's one of life's inherent truths.
