[K-Traveler] Strolling around ‘Jungangtap’ in Chungju: midpoint of Korea

대한민국의 중심, 충주의 중앙탑을 걷다

충주가 보고 싶었다. 충주는 생각보다 서울에서 멀지 않다. 서울 서초IC에서 112KM. 서울 시민이 일상 중에 쌓인 스트레스를 털어낼 수 있는 공간적, 시간적, 심리적으로 가까운 거리다.

충주로 가는 길은 완만한 산세가 어우러지고 구릉마다 때마침 복숭아꽃, 배꽃, 사과꽃이 만발해 주행 속도가 늦춰질 수밖에 없는 경관을 자랑한다.

‘중심(中心)’인 충(忠)과 ‘마을(州)’의 뜻 ‘주(州)로 이뤄진 명칭에서 알 수 있듯이 충주는 예로부터 대한민국의 중심지다.

중심은 대개 두 가지 속뜻이 있다. 중심이 가지는 강한 권력적 힘과 뛰어나지도 않고 모자라지도 않는 ’가운데‘라는 의미다.

8세기 후반 통일신라 원성왕 때 국토의 중앙 지점을 알아보기 위해 남북 끝 지점에서 같은 날, 같은 시각, 같은 보폭을 가진 잘 걷는 사람을 정해 출발시켰다고 한다. 그들은 항상 이곳에서 만났기에 이 자리에 탑을 세우고 ‘중앙탑’이라고 이름 지었다는 설화가 있다.

중앙탑은 국보 제6호다. 충주시 중앙탑면 탑평리에 있어 근래에 ‘충주 탑평리 칠층석탑’으로 명명됐다. 그러나 이곳을 기리고자 했던 역사와 지정학적 중요성을 상기하며 오랜 관습대로 ‘중앙탑’으로 부르고 있다.

1912년에 촬영한 사진에 의하면 왼쪽 기단이 터져 나오고 기단이 약간 기울어져 있다. 1917년 보수공사 후 100년이 지난 2016년에 구조적 결함이 없어 부분 보수작업을 했다. 원형이 잘 보존됐다는 뜻이다.

중앙탑은 크고 잘 생긴 탑이다.

통일신라시대의 석탑 중 높이 14.5m로 가장 규모가 크고 반듯한 균형이 돋보인다. 지붕돌의 살짝 치켜 올린 네 귀퉁이 끝은 경쾌한 매력을 더한다. 보주 위의 창공과 유유한 남한강변은 수직과 수평의 완벽한 어울림이다.

중앙탑을 본 사람은 다른 석탑 앞에선 뭔가 부족함을 느끼기 일쑤다. 완벽하고 준수한 사람을 만난 경험 덕에 다른 이의 외모를 인정할 수 없는 일과 비슷하다.

중앙탑이 불교의 산물인지, 신라시대 영토에 대한 표식인지는 단정할 수 없다. 한강 뱃길에 중요한 이정표 역할을 했다는 사실은 분명하다. 오로지 1,200년 세월 동안 탑만이 분분한 의견들을 의연히 듣고 있을 뿐이다

중앙탑 바로 옆을 흐르는 남한강의 물길은 깊고 여유롭다. 이곳에서 국제조정경기대회가 열렸다는 사실은 강의 깊이와 길이는 물론 주변 경관의 아름다움을 대변한다. 멈춘 듯 흐르는 강물과 의연한 석탑에 기대면 몇 밤이고 지새울 위로와 평화가 있다.

인근 ‘비내섬길’은 공전의 히트 드라마 ‘사랑의 불시착’ 촬영지였다. 드라마처럼 중앙탑에서 만난 수많은 연인의 이야기는 계속될 것이다.

중앙탑에서 자동차로 5분 거리에 ‘충주 고구려비 전시관’과 ‘탄금대’가 있다.

고구려비는 국내 유일하게 남아있는 석비로 국보 제205호다. 고구려 장수왕이 남한강 유역을 개척한 후 세운 기념비로 추정되며, 충주 지역이 고구려와 통일 신라 시대의 요충지였음을 알 수 있게 한다. 고구려의 기마병은 미지의 남쪽 끝까지 달리고 싶었을 것이다.

탄금대는 대한민국 제42호 명승지다. 한강 8경의 한 곳으로 알려져 있을 만큼 풍광이 뛰어나다. 가야가 신라에 패망하자 악공 우륵이 정착해 가야금을 연주했던 사실에서 ‘탄금’이라고 이름 지어졌다.

 

또한 탄금대는 가슴 아픈 곳이다. 임진왜란 당시 신립장군이 참패를 했던 전장이다.

솔숲을 걸어 열두 대가 있는 탄금정 누각에서 누리는 절정의 풍광은 무료인 점이 어색할 정도로 절경이다.

충주 사람을 양반이라 하기도 하고 우유부단하다고도 평하기도 한다. 그들의 행동보다 느린 어눌한 답변에는 천오백 년 동안 한강 유역의 격전지에서 살아남은 사람들이 익힌 습성이 깃들어있다. 눈치 없이 빠른 답은 빠른 죽음을 불러왔기 때문이다.

그러나 내가 1980년경 mbc 라디오 방송 프로그램의 진행자로 선정됐을 때 충주 사람의 말은 사투리가 없으며 속도, 발음, 억양이 표준어에 매우 정확하다는 평을 듣고 내심 놀란 경험이 있다. 충주는 지형으로나 언어로나 표준값을 가진 도시다.

나라의 중심, 이 아름다운 충절의 고장은 전장의 역사와는 달리 한가롭고 넉넉하다. 사과와 복숭아가 향기롭게 넘쳐난다. 수안보온천, 능암온천은 오고가는 여행객을 따뜻하게 위로하며 건강을 선물한다.

역사적 유물이나 근접성, 안전한 먹거리로 학생들의 고적답사와 효도 관광으로 만족스러운 곳이다. 어제와 오늘을 탐색하고 미래로 향하는 부모님과 청소년이 손을 잡고 머무는 여행지다.

이번 답사에 옛 동무 길경택 예성문화연구원장(전 충주박물관장)의 정겨운 안내가 푸근했다. 그의 평생에 걸친 향토사에 대한 연구와 헌신은 충주 중원의 유물 발견 복원과 충주박물관에서 발현된 것이다..

남한강 뱃길에서 소요하던 조선 효종 때 대학자 김창흡의 시 한 구절을 읊조리며 월악산으로 발을 옮겼다.

금탑 북안에 탑이 있다. 높이가 십여 장으로 멀리서도 보인다.

상사바우(절벽의 바위)는 이미 멀어지고 하얀 탑이 사람처럼 섰다.

 

 

Walk alongside ‘Jungangtap’ in Chungju, midpoint of Korea

I wanted to visit Chungju. Chungju, North Chungcheong Province, is not that far from Seoul -- only 112  kilometers from Seocho Interchange. It is just the right kind of vicinity for Seoulites to shrug off their daily stress. It is close to us in space, time and heart. 

 

The road to Chungju is mostly surrounded by low-rise mountains, with hills embroidered with blooming peach, pear and apple flowers, naturally weighing down on drivers' wheels. 

Located at the center of Korea, Chungju is a combination of "chung," meaning middle, and "ju," or town. 

"Chung" contains two different connotations. On one hand, it signifies the powerful authority of the center. On the other hand, it represents neutrality, not tilted to either ends. 

In the late 8th century, King Wonseong of the Unified Silla dynasty dispatched two people to find the center point of his territory. Each departed from the northern and southern end to the opposite direction, at the same hour of the same day at the same stride. As their journey always ended at Chungju, the king built a pagoda called "Jungangtap" as a landmark. 

 

Jungangtap is the sixth national treasure of South Korea. It is officially labeled “Seven-story Stone Pagoda in Tappyeong-ri, Chungju,” due to its location. However, in memory of its heritage and geological uniqueness, people mostly call this stone pagoda “Jungangtap."

Judging from the photographic archive taken in 1912, the authorities decided that the pagoda's stylobate on the leftside is slightly slanted. They executed a restoration project in 1917. After 100 years, the pagoda did not display much to be repaired, so they carried out some minor restoration works in 2016. This indicates that the pagoda's original form is well kept. 

After all, Jungangtop is a big, sleek piece of art. 

Its 14.5-meter majesty, neatly balanced, makes the monument the greatest of all pagodas created during the Unifed Silla period. The curvy arch of the four rooftop corners adds to its jaunty charms. The sky blankets the orb and surrounding Namhangang River boasts the perfect aesthetics of horizontality and verticality. Those who have witnessed the beauty of Jungangtap at least once in their lifetime may find other pagodas insatiable. 

It is hard to tell whether Jungangtap is a creation of the Buddhist heritage, or a territorial mark of the Silla Dynasty. But it surely has functioned as a milestone for sailors crossing the Hangang River. Only the pagoda knows the truth, hidden in its 1,200-year history.

Namhangang River which flows right next to the Jungangtap is deep but calm and steady. The river held the World Rowing Championship in the past, in recognition of its beauty, depth and length. The river, looking static but on constant flow, and the pagoda, standing tall and strong, replenishes troubled minds with peace and comfort for countless nights. 

"Binae wetland walkway," located next to the pagoda, is another popular tourist site. It was one of the shooting sites for mega-hit TV series, “Crash Landing On You.” Just like in the show, real-life love stories will hopefully thrive in the blessings of this beautiful scenery. 

"Exhibition Hall of Chungju Goguryeo Monument" and "Tangeumdae Terrace" are located within the five-minute drive distance from the Jungangtap. 

 

Among the exhibited remnants are Goguryeo Monument, the 205th natural treasure of Korea. Goguyeo Monument is assumed to be erected by King Jangsu of Goguryeo dynasty to commemorate the conqueror's pioneering of the region. The monument is also a symbol of Chungju's geopolitical significance in the Unified Silla period. It oozes the gallantry of Goguryeo's cavalry soldiers, yearning to explore further to the mysterious south. 

 

Tangeumdae Terrace is a scenic spot that matches its fame as the 42nd national treasure of Korea. The breath-taking view earned its place among the eight most beautiful spots along Hangang River. Tangeumdae is a combination of two words: "tan," to play an instrument, and "geum," a string instrument. The name Tangeum Terrace originates from Woo Reuk, a master player of gayageum (harp of Gaya), who immigrated to this place after his mother country, Gaya, fell to Silla. This legendary maestro would sit on the Tangeum Terrace and play the Gaya instrument in memory of his lost home. 

Tangeumdae Terrace has another sad historical story to tell. General Sin Rip, a patriotic hero of Joseon Kingdom, lost his battle against the Japanese invaders. 

After enjoying the scenery at Tangeumdae Terrace, one can move on to the lush pine forest. Such jaw-dropping experience open to anyone, not costing a penny. 

Some say people from Chungju have personality of yangban elites, and some say they are indecisive. Their laidback way of speaking, as a matter of fact, is a fruit of the history of Chungju. Through 1,500 years of fighting history, they have learned better to refrain from tactlessly quick answers.

When I was emceeing for MBC Radio in the 1980s, the audience told me the surprising fact that how Chungju people do not speak dialects -- their pronunciation and speed resemble those of Seoul. Such responses surprised me indeed. As mentioned previously, Chungju is a place which withholds the value of "middle."

Despite its war-torn history, Chungju managed to maintain the beauty of relaxed and laidback nature. Moreover, the town emanates of the sweet scent of apples and peaches. The aesthetic view and sweet fragrance provides comfort, healing the wounds of visitors to "Suanbo Hot Spring," "Anseong Carbonic Spring Water" and others.

Chungju is a perfect match for school trips in search of historical heritage, as well as family and foodie trips. This is the place where parents can take their kids to teach the historical past, present and future of South Korea, and share the cultural heritages.

My exploration of Chungju was enriched by my dear old friend Gil Kyung-taek, a former director general of Chungju Museum, thanks to his heart-felt guide. His lifelong study and dedication to the local history are inspired by the Jungwon excavation and restoration project of central Chungju and the relics of Chungju Museum.
