Taegisan-Cheongtaesan ecotourism zone: Where nature and humans coexist
Cheongtaesan (Mount. Cheongtaesan) and Taegisan (Mount. Taegisan) in Hoengseong County have been designated as "ecotourism areas" by the Ministry of Environment. The concept of ecotourism areas began in 2013 with the goal of expanding the reach of ecotourism and promoting economic opportunities through the conservation of natural environments.
The ecological exploration routes of Cheongtaesan and Taegisan provide a unique experience for tourists, offering an environment where they can enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings throughout the four seasons. These routes also include eco-friendly renewable energy projects that utilize the preserved natural environment, as well as incorporate historical and cultural stories connecting the past and present along a trekking course.
Starting from 2024, these areas will receive government funding and consulting support for operation and management.
The county plans to encourage the participation of local residents, fostering expertise and job creation, while also contributing to the local economy by selling agricultural and specialty products.

Taegisan: Embracing clean nature and history
Taegisan, the highest mountain in Hoengseong County at 1,261 meters above sea level, boasts not only majestic mountain scenery but also exceptional views. Especially during winter, it showcases outstanding snowy landscapes. The wind turbines along the gentle slopes of the northern side of Taegisan, combined with the white snowflakes, create an unforgettable scenery. The county has developed a total trekking route of 12.4 kilometers in the Taegisan area. Additionally, there is an "Eco 800 Trekking" course connecting Taegisan to Cheongtaesan.
Where the wind blows: Taegisan Wind Power Plant
The Taegisan Wind Power Plant, which started operating in November 2008 with 20 turbines, utilizes the power of the winds at the summit of Taegisan to generate electricity. Operating 24/7, 365 days a year, it supplies electricity to approximately 25,000 households in Hoengseong and Pyeongchang regions.
Starting Point for Taegisan Trekking: Yanggudumijae
Yanggudumijae refers to the hillside of the National Route 6 that connects Hoengseong County's Dunnae-myeon to Pyeongchang County's Bongpyeong-myeon. It is situated on the 8th ridge of Taegisan. The starting point for the Taegisan National Ecotourism Route, known as the "Sancheoljjuk-gil," has a parking lot. With a paved road leading to the summit, it is easily accessible for tourists who want to enjoy the scenery or engage in trekking.
Healing in the Forest: Cheongtaesan
Cheongtaesan spans Dunnae-myeon in Hoengseong County and Bangnim-myeon and Bongpyeong-myeon in Pyeongchang County, reaching an altitude of 1,200 meters. It allows for snowy landscapes even in early spring. It is said that Lee Seong-gye, the founder (“Taejo”) of the Joseon Dynasty, was captivated by the beautiful scenery and named the mountain Cheongtaesan after leaving his mark on a large rock.
Opened in 1993, Cheongtaesan Natural Recreation Forest is one of the top recreation forests in the country. Its well-maintained trails lead to the summit of Cheongtaesan, providing an enjoyable hiking experience. A deck road has been created for elderly visitors to easily access the forest. The forest is equipped with accommodation facilities, a forest training ground, and a camping deck amid lush greenery.
