[K-Traveler] Ethiopia, country close but yet far from Korea

[멀고도 가까운 에티오피아, 커피와 인류애에 눈 뜨다]

이번 아프리카 여행에 에티오피아가 목적지는 아니었다. 수도 아디스아바바 공항은 아시아 발 항공기들이 아프리카 전역으로 환승하는 허브공항이어서 스탑오버(단기체류)를 활용해 며칠간 머문 곳이었다.

적도에 가까우면서 해발 2천m 넘는 곳에 위치한 아디스아바바는 온화한 날씨와 푸릇푸릇하고 울긋불긋한 가로수로 풍성했다. 엄동설한의 한국에서 온 여행자들을 감격시키기에 더없이 좋은 곳이었다.

이 나라가 가깝고도 친근하게 느껴진 이유는 커피의 본산지이며, 오페라와 뮤지컬로 유명한 '아이다' 여주인공 아이다 공주의 조국이며, 더욱이 한국전쟁 참전국이기 때문일 것이다.

세계 최고 커피 원두 생산지인 예가체프를 방문해 이 나라 기간산업인 커피산업 깊숙이 들어가 보며 커피 종주국의 커피 문화를 제대로 체험해 봤다.

에티오피아와 20세기 말 분리 독립한 에리트리아에만 있는 '분나 마플라트(Bunna Maflat)'라 불리는 커피세리머니가 있다.
풀 깔린 바닥에 앉은 하얀 전통의상의 여성이 향을 피우며 생두를 화로에 직접 볶고, 빻고, 끓여서 대접하는 것으로 전통적인 손님 환대 예식이다.

한 시간 이상 소요되는 과정을 지켜보며 자연스럽게 환담을 나누고, 간단한 다과 또는 정찬과 함께 정성으로 완성된 가장 신선한 커피를 세 잔까지 권유받는다.

최고 품질의 예가체프 생두를 바로 볶아 마시는 그 맛을 굳이 말로 표현해 무엇하리오!

신성함마저 느껴지는 예식에서 에티오피아인들의 커피에 대한 자부심과 관계지향적인 태도를 엿볼 수 있었다.

호텔 로비와 길거리 커피 노점에서도 비슷한 방식으로 커피를 즐길 수 있는 게 에티오피아 여행 즐거움 중 하나다.

아디스아바바 한국전쟁 참전 기념관을 참배 차 방문했을 때 마침 성탄절 파티가 열리고 있었다. 국민의 절반 정도가 정교회 신도인 에티오피아에서는 1월 7일이 성탄절이다. 12월 말에 한국을 떠난 여행팀은 또 한 번 성탄을 보낸 셈이다.

참전용사 후손과 아디스아바바시민들을 위한 복지회관으로도 이용되는 곳은 한국정부 보은사업의 일환으로 건립돼 한국과 에티오피아를 잇는 가교역할을 하고 있다. 참전용사 후손들 커뮤니티가 형성돼 있고 한국어 강좌 등이 진행 중이다.

한국전에 참전한 에티오피아군은 용맹하게 싸웠고 혹독한 한국의 겨울에 고생이 심했다고 한다. 그러나 더 큰 시련은 전쟁이 끝나고 고국에 돌아갔을 때 환영받지 못한 일이라고 한다.

당시 에티오피아에 공산정권이 막 들어섰기 때문이었다. 자유민주주의 수호를 위해 중국과 북한에 맞서 싸웠다는 이유로 그들은 낙인찍혔고 차별 당했다고 한다. 희생자와 살아남은 군인들 본인과 가족들이 겪었을 고초를 생각하면 깊은 감사함과 함께 진한 채무감을 느끼지 않을 수 없었다.

참전용사 손주아이들이 우리말로 인사하며 격하게 환영해주었다. K-Pop과 댄스를 하며 우리말 연극을 보여줬다.
아이들이 마지막으로 'You raise me up, 당신이 나를 일으켜 세우십니다' 를 합창할 때 여행팀 모두는 터져 나오는 눈물을 감출 수 없었다.

‘빈곤 포르노’라며 부정적인 의견도 팽배하지만, 아디스아바바 거리 모습은 TV에 비춰지는 아프리카 모습과 다르지 않았다.

저임금 노동자들의 애환과 부모의 무관심 속에 교육기회마저 박탈당한 어린 천사들이 마주한 사회적 불평등, 지독한 가난이 일상인 이곳에서, 직접 겪지는 않았지만 한국전쟁 당시 우리 모습과 중첩돼 무심하게 지나쳐지지 않았다.

여행보다 특별한 ‘무엇’을 찾아 나선 여정이었다. 인류애에 감동 받았고 나의 미약함에 무기력해졌다. 여행이 끝난 후 천천히 생각해볼 과제로 남겨두기로 한다.

배우 오드리 햅번 어록으로 유명한 샘 레벤슨의 시 ‘Time Tested Beauty Tips’(시간이 지나도 변하지 않는 아름다움의 비결) 중 일부로 에티오피아 여행의 단상을 대신한다.

[Ethiopia, country close but yet far from Korea, enlightened by coffee and humanity]

Our trip to Africa did not have Ethiopia as a set destination. Originally the Addis Ababa Airport, was a layover destination for a few days, as it is a hub airport for Asian-bound flights transferring throughout Africa.

Addis Ababa, located near the equator and at an altitude of over 2,000 meters, had mild climate and was rich with streets lined with trees. It was an ideal place to impress travelers coming from the cold winters of Korea.

The reason this country felt close and friendly might be because it is the birthplace of well known coffee, and famous opera “Aida,” moreover, Ethiopia was one of the countries which participated in the Korean War.

Visiting the coffee-producing region of Yirgacheffe, the world's top coffee bean producer, I delved deep into the coffee industry and experienced the culture of one of the most famous coffee-producing country.

In both Ethiopia and Eritrea, a country which became independent at the end of the 20th century, there is a coffee ceremony called “Bunna Maflat” which is exclusive to these regions. It is a traditional guest reception ceremony where a woman in traditional white attire sits on a grass, ignites incense, roasts raw coffee beans directly on a stove, grinds them, and brews coffee with the beans in order to serve to the visitors.

By participating in the welcome ceremony which consists of over an hour long process of brewing a fresh cup of coffee, visitors are offered with up to three cups of off with simple snacks or a meal to enjoy the drink with.

Describing the taste of directly roasted Yirgacheffe coffee beans is unnecessary; the taste speaks for itself.

By partaking in the sacred ceremony, one could easily understand the Ethiopians' pride in their coffee.
One of the joy of experiencing a similar way of enjoying coffee in hotel lobbies and street coffee stalls added to the pleasure of traveling in Ethiopia.

When visiting the Korean War Memorial in Addis Ababa, a Christmas party was taking place. In Ethiopia, where about half the population believes in Orthodox Christianity, January 7th is the Christmas. The travel team, which departed from South Korea at the end of December, experienced Christmas once again once they got to Ethiopia.

The welfare center used by descendants of war veterans and citizens of Addis Ababa, was established as part of the South Korean government's aid project, serving as a bridge between South Korea and Ethiopia. Within the center a community for the descendants of war veteran, and Korean language classes are taking place.

The Ethiopian troops who participated in the Korean War fought bravely and suffered the harsh Korean winter. However, a greater hardship awaited them when they returned home despite of their scarification, soldiers were not welcomed. This was because Ethiopia had fallen under a communist regime. Since the soldiers fought against communist party during the war, soldiers were stigmatized and discriminated against. I felt deep sense of gratitude and obligation which couldn't be ignored.

The grandchildren of the war veterans warmly welcomed us, they greeted us by welcoming us in Korean, they performed K-Pop and dances, and presented a play in Korean.

As the children performed “You Raise Me Up,” tears welled up uncontrollably.

While there may be negative opinions about “poverty porn," the scenes in the streets of Addis Ababa were not much different from the Africa being portrayed on TV.

In this place where social inequality, extreme poverty, and the deprivation of educational opportunities for young angels are everyday occurrences amid the struggles of low-wage workers and parental indifference, although we haven’t directly experienced the hardship, it couldn't be casually passed by, because the issues resonated amongst our because it was similar to us during the Korean War.

It was a journey in search of something more special than simply just travel. We were deeply touched by human kindness, throughout our journey I felt powerless in my insignificance. I decided to leave it as a task to ponder slowly after our journey ended.
