Senior reporter Hwang Dae-il nominated new CEO of Yonhap News Agency
SEOUL, Sept. 26 (Yonhap) -- Hwang Dae-il, a senior reporter for Yonhap News Agency, South Korea's key newswire, was nominated Thursday as the company's new CEO and president.
Hwang was chosen from three candidates during an extraordinary board meeting of the Korea News Agency Commission, a body overseeing Yonhap's management.
The other two candidates were Choo Seung-ho, editor-in-chief of Yonhap News TV, and Tschoe Ki-eok, president and CEO of Yonhap Infomax.
Hwang will begin his three-year term after being appointed during a Yonhap general shareholders' meeting on Oct. 10.
The incoming CEO majored in public administration at Korea University and joined Yonhap News Agency as a reporter in 1990.
During his time at Yonhap, he worked as a correspondent in Jakarta, and headed various departments, including the finance and economy departments, before serving as editor of the national and social departments and chief of content.
In his manifesto submitted to the commission, Hwang vowed to help Yonhap become Asia's No. 1 news agency by following an "A1+F4" strategy, which calls for equipping with artificial intelligence and being the "first" to arrive at a news site, the "fastest" to report, based on "facts" and in a "fair" manner.
To strengthen Yonhap's public role, Hwang pledged to support the arrangement of reunions between family members separated by the 1950-53 Korean War, and launch Vietnamese and Thai services to add to the six foreign language services currently in operation.
Additionally, the nominee vowed to create a fact-checking department, update the ethics charter and reporting guidelines to improve objective and balanced reporting, and pull the company out of its current deficit by quickly restoring government subscriptions and finding new sources of earning.
