Court orders 10-yr prison term for deepfake crime suspect

SEOUL, Oct. 30 (Yonhap) -- A Seoul court on Wednesday sentenced the main suspect in a high-profile deepfake crime case involving alumni of the nation's most prestigious Seoul National University (SNU) to 10 years in prison.

The Seoul Central District Court handed out the sentence for a 40-year-old man, surnamed Park, for producing and distributing fabricated pornographic videos of his school alumni. His accomplice, surnamed Kang, received a four-year prison term.

Park was indicted for creating some 100 deepfake videos and distributing as many as 1,700 such videos online between July 2021 and April this year, violating the sexual violence prevention act.

Investigations identified 61 victims, including 12 SNU alumni, from the same school attended by Park and Kang.

"The defendants committed a digital sex crime targeting alumni of a university known for fostering the nation's greatest intelligence," the court said, calling their actions "highly reproachable" for having sexually molested and insulted the victims' character over a long period.
