How North Korea appears to be funding nukes through cryptocurrency cyberattacks

Even as North Korea’s missile tests and hostile rhetoric make headlines, there’s been a quieter threat rumbling beneath the surface in the form of North Korean hackers. 2021 was apparently “a banner year” for the North’s cybercriminals, according to a report by Chainalysis. It says North Korea was behind “at least seven attacks on cryptocurrency platforms that extracted nearly $400 million worth of digital assets last year.” And that would be enough to pay for a sizeable chunk of the Pyongyang’s annual defense budget!
