The haves and the have-nots – the divide between Korea’s wealthy business elites and the rest of us has been seen by many as an uncrossable divide, shaping numerous government promises of economic fairness in recent years. But in the wake of COVID-19, we’re seeing something really interesting that signals a possible new direction. After promises of vast donations by two of the country’s most successful startup founders, President Moon Jae-in this week hailed their move as a “positive change” toward the spread of corporate social responsibility and a more inclusive society. Are we really seeing the birth of a new donation culture in Korea?
