Police launch internal probe into ex-boy band member over sexual allegations

SEOUL, Oct. 25 (Yonhap) -- Police have launched a preliminary investigation into allegations that a former member of group F.T. Island went to nightclubs and engaged in sexually inappropriate acts toward his wife during their marriage, officials said Friday.

The Seoul Gangnam Police Station said they have opened an internal probe into the case after a civil petitioner filed a complaint against Choi Min-hwan, a former drummer for the rock band, on charges of violating the commercial sex acts.

On Thursday, Choi's former wife, Yulhee, previously a member of the girl group Laboum, made the revelations in a YouTube video, accusing Choi of going to nightclubs during their marriage and sticking money in her chest in front of her family.

The issue soon sparked public controversy, with many people calling on Choi to drop out of a show aired on KBS, called "The Return of Superman," featuring him together with his kids.

The singer's agency issued a statement, saying Choi will opt out of all media activities.

"Choi Min-hwan feels a sense of responsibility for disappointing the public and viewers, and wishes to halt all media-related activities, including the show aired together with his children," the FNC Entertainment said. "We are sorry to have caused concern and discomfort to many."

The couple had a child together in 2018 and married shortly after, before separating last year. Choi holds child custody over their three children.
