Yoon's approval rating sinks to lowest point since taking office: Gallup poll

SEOUL, Oct. 25 (Yonhap) -- President Yoon Suk Yeol's approval rating dropped to 20 percent, falling back to its lowest level since he took office in May 2022, a poll showed Friday.

The survey, conducted by the polling agency Gallup Korea, showed that the positive assessment of Yoon's performance plunged 2 percentage points from the previous week, while 70 percent of respondents disapproved of his performance, up 1 percentage point.

His approval ratings had remained above the 20 percent mark for five weeks after dropping to an all-time low of 20 percent in the second week of September in Gallup surveys.

Yoon's handling of first lady Kim Keon Hee's allegations, the economy and lack of communication were cited as reasons for the negative assessment.

The first lady has been accused of involvement in a stock manipulation scheme, the illegal receipt of a luxury bag and interference in the ruling People Power Party (PPP)'s candidate nominations ahead of the April general elections.

The approval ratings of the PPP and the main opposition Democratic Party both came to 30 percent.

In the same survey, 73 percent respondents viewed North Korea's increased military cooperation with Russia as a threat, while 66 percent said South Korea should only provide nonlethal military assistance, such as medicine and food, to Ukraine.

The poll was conducted on 1,001 adults from Tuesday to Thursday and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
