Secretary of SK chief's estranged wife given 5-yr term for fraud

SEOUL, Oct. 25 (Yonhap) -- A secretary for Roh Soh-yeong, SK Chairman Chey Tae-won's estranged wife now serving as director of Art Center Nabi, was sentenced by a court Friday to five years in prison on charges of fraud and other crimes.

The Seoul Western District Court handed out the prison term after finding the 34-year-old secretary, surnamed Lee, guilty of having swindled Roh out of about 2.1 billion won (US$1.52 million) over four years since 2019.

Lee, who joined the art center in 2019, was indicted for borrowing 438 million won in Roh's name from banks for personal use and stealing 1.19 billion won from her bank account over four years. The secretary is also accused of deceiving another Art Center Nabi employee into sending 500 million won to him under the pretext of legal expenses.

The court said the defendant appears to have used most of the swindled money for personal purposes and the crime methods were very bad, as even private documents were forged.

Roh, a daughter of former President Roh Tae-woo, has been in divorce proceedings with the SK Group chief.
