SEOUL, Nov. 12 (Yonhap) -- President Yoon Suk Yeol will travel to Peru and Brazil from Nov. 14-21 to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and Group of 20 summits, his office said Tuesday.

Yoon will visit Peru from Thursday to Saturday to participate in the APEC summit and then travel to Brazil from Sunday to Tuesday for the G20 summit, Principal Deputy National Security Adviser Kim Tae-hyo told reporters.

On the sidelines of APEC and G20 summits, Yoon is arranging a bilateral summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, a senior presidential official told reporters.

Talks have been also under way to arrange a trilateral summit with U.S. President Joe Biden and Ishiba, as well as a separate meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the official said.

When asked if Yoon might meet with Trump en route to the trips, a senior official said Yoon's office has been in contact with Trump's aides, though no decisions have been made.

"(We) have indeed been in close communication with Trump's team," the official told reporters.

Yoon said he and Trump agreed to meet at an early date during their phone call last week.

South Korean officials and lawmakers are increasing their outreach to Trump's inner circle, anticipating potential shifts in trade policies and increased demands for South Korea's financial contribution to U.S. troops in the country.

At APEC in Lima, Yoon will affirm South Korea's commitment to free and fair trade at the main session and CEO summit, and accept the chairmanship for the next meeting. Gyeongju, located about 275 kilometers southeast of Seoul, has been selected to host the 2025 APEC summit.

On the sidelines, he is set to hold a summit with Peruvian President Dina Boluarte and attend a ceremony to sign the nameplate of a vessel being built by a South Korean company at a shipyard in Peru.

At the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Yoon will pledge South Korea's support for global efforts to address famine, poverty and climate change.

"The trip is aimed at strengthening international solidarity for upholding a rules-based international order, and to expand our diplomatic horizons and practical cooperation with Latin America," Kim said. "Above all, (Yoon) will emphasize the need for international unity against military cooperation between Russia and North Korea."
