100 military vehicles, choppers mobilized for Dec. 3 martial law operation

SEOUL, Dec. 19 (Yonhap) -- Some 100 military vehicles and 12 Blackhawk helicopters were mobilized by the military for the short-lived martial law imposition on Dec. 3, an opposition lawmaker said Thursday.

The list of mobilized equipment includes 107 vehicles, such as buses and armed tactical vehicles, as well as choppers that carried special forces troops to the National Assembly, said Rep. Bak Seung-a of the main opposition Democratic Party (DP), citing data by the defense ministry.

Among the troops mobilized on the night of the botched martial law imposition, special forces who were instructed to seal off the National Assembly, the National Election Committee and the DP headquarters accounted for the majority, with 1,139 soldiers.

About 200 soldiers were each deployed from the counterintelligence command and the Capital Defense Command, while some 30 troops were mobilized from the Defense Intelligence Command, according to the data.

The martial law troops were allegedly armed with assault rifles, stun guns and drone jamming guns, with some 10,000 rounds of live ammunition reported to have been taken out for use.

Police earlier said some 1,500 troops were mobilized on the night of the martial law declaration, a figure that the defense ministry confirmed.
