11th case of African swine fever confirmed in S. Korea this year
SEOUL, Dec. 16 (Yonhap) -- South Korea has confirmed the 11th case of African swine fever (ASF) of the year, the farm ministry said Monday.
The latest ASF case was found at a pig farm in Yangju, 25 kilometers southwest of Seoul, in Gyeonggi Province. More than 5,500 pigs at the farm will be slaughtered, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
The previous case was detected at a local pig farm in early November.
Authorities are investigating the affected farm and conducting emergency quarantine measures to prevent ASF from spreading to nearby pig farms. Disinfection operations will be conducted at pig farms in Yangju, and neighboring cities and counties, the ministry said.
ASF does not affect humans but is deadly to pigs. There is currently no vaccine or cure for the disease.
