Police release defense intelligence commander in martial law probe

SEOUL, Dec. 16 (Yonhap) -- The chief of the Defense Intelligence Command was released from emergency arrest Monday after prosecutors rejected the police's detainment of him in connection with the martial law probe, claiming that the military court has jurisdiction over the case.

Police put the unit's commander Maj. Gen. Moon Sang-ho under emergency arrest the previous day, on suspicions of involvement in the operations of martial law, which President Yoon Suk Yeol declared on Dec. 3 but was lifted hours later upon a parliamentary rejection.

The Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office said it withheld approval of Moon's detainment by the police, claiming that jurisdiction over his case lies with the military court.

Immediately after the decision, police released Moon but expressed "regret" over the prosecution's decision and pledged to conduct a "thorough" investigation.
