Opposition leader discusses S. Korea-U.S. economic ties with AMCHAM chief after Yoon impeachment
SEOUL, Dec. 16 (Yonhap) -- Opposition leader Lee Jae-myung held a meeting with the head of a top U.S. business lobby group on Monday and discussed economic ties between the two countries amid the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol.
Lee of the main opposition Democratic Party emphasized that the current political instability is affecting the economy but will be merely "a stress test" for South Korea during his meeting with James Kim, the president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM).
"Consider this moment of confusion an opportunity to invest in South Korea or to buy at a low price," Lee said.
During the meeting, Kim highlighted AMCHAM's efforts to focus on South Korea's potential by separating business from politics despite uncertainties in the current political situation.
He also voiced his support for the National Assembly's vote to impeach Yoon over the Dec. 3 short-lived martial law declaration and expressed his respect for the country's dedication to democracy.
The meeting is seen as part of Lee's efforts to dispel global market concerns about the impact of Yoon's impeachment on the South Korean economy and to highlight his party's contribution to the stability of state affairs.
On Sunday, Lee suggested forming a consultative body between the parliament and the government to stabilize state affairs.
