Military deploys around 500 personnel for recovery efforts in Jeju Air crash

SEOUL, Dec. 30 (Yonhap) -- The military has deployed some 500 service members to assist with recovery efforts in this week's Jeju Air plane crash at a southwestern airport, the defense ministry said Monday.

Some 340 personnel, along with rescue equipment, such as fire trucks and ambulances, were sent to Muan International Airport in Muan County, located about 290 kilometers south of Seoul, after the crash Sunday, with around 160 troops deployed Monday, according to the ministry.

"In cooperation with the National Fire Agency, the military provided needed equipment and supplies," ministry spokesperson Jeon Ha-kyou said in a regular briefing.

The deadly crash killed 179 people of the 181 people aboard. Authorities are conducting an investigation into its exact cause.
