(profile) Veteran maritime expert tapped as oceans minister
SEOUL, Dec. 4 (Yonhap) -- Kang Do-hyung, the nominee for South Korea's new oceans minister, is a veteran expert who has been at the forefront of commercializing marine science.
Born on the southern island of Jeju, the 53-year-old earned his master's and doctoral degrees in marine biology at Jeju National University and joined the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) in 2006.
He then continued to serve in various positions in the institute, including as chief of the Jeju Research Institute.
He has specialized in marine biology, including microalgae, and has created three research companies to take the lead in commercializing related research results.
He was named the head of KIOST in February.
