Foreign ministry holds phone talks with U.S., Japanese, Chinese envoys after impeachment

SEOUL, Dec. 27 (Yonhap) -- High-ranking officials of South Korea's foreign ministry held phone discussions with ambassadors from the United States, Japan and China following the National Assembly's vote to impeach acting President Han Duck-soo, the foreign ministry said Friday.

Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul spoke with U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Philip Goldberg to exchange views on issues between the two countries as Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok assumed the presidential role after Han's impeachment.

During the call, Goldberg reaffirmed the U.S.' unwavering support for the strong U.S.-South Korea alliance and emphasized the importance of continued close communication, the ministry said.

First Vice Minister Kim Hong-kyun and Deputy Minister for Political Affairs Chung Byung-won also held separate phone talks with Japanese and Chinese envoys, respectively, discussing ways to maintain strong bilateral relationships under the leadership of new acting President Choi.
