Palme d'Or winner Bong Joon-ho to make a surprise appearance at Cannes Film Festival

CANNES, July 6 (Yonhap) -- Director Bong Joon-ho, who re-wrote the Korean film history with the movie "Parasite," once again shines at the 74th Cannes International Film Festival, which opened on July 6 (local time) in Cannes, a resort city in southern France.

Director Bong, the winner of the Palme d'Or--the highest award at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival--will appear as the main character at the 'rendez-vous avec…', which will be held at the 'Palais des Festivals', the main venue of this event, at 11 am on the 7th.

The Rendezvous Avec, which invites world-famous film industry figures to talk to the audience, is one of the must-have events at the Cannes Film Festival.

Organizers announced only five of the six expected figures at this year's film festival, including actors Jodie Foster and Matt Damon, while the last person was not disclosed.

In a notice posted earlier this month, the organizers only said, "As a major figure in the global film industry and a close friend of the Cannes Film Festival, a surprise guest who left a record in the film festival's history will talk to the audience."

Director Bong won four awards, including the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best International Film at the American Academy Awards in February 2020.

There were no Korean films at this year's Cannes Film Festival which competed for the Palme d'Or.

Director Han Jae-rim's "Emergency Declaration" has been invited in the non-competitive category and director Hong Sang-soo's "In Front of Your Face" in the newly established Cannes Premier category this year.

The Cannes Film Festival, which is usually held in May, has been delayed for two months due to the coronavirus pandemic. Last year, the film festival failed to be held, so only invited films were released and no winners were selected.
