Harvard professor’s paper on comfort women comes under fierce review

Ex-U.S. President and Harvard Law School graduate Barack Obama described the plight of so-called comfort women as a “terrible and egregious” violation of human rights. But recently we’ve seen the issue of Japan’s past sexual slavery brought back to the fore after J. Mark Ramseyer, a Harvard Law School professor, wrote a paper diminishing Japan’s responsibility for recruiting comfort women and claiming they were prostitutes contracted for money. It’s set to be published in the March issue of the International Review of Law and Economics, but the journal is now reviewing concerns about Ramseyer’s work amid a fierce backlash.
