Squint and you might still miss it, but a tiny representation of South Korea’s Dokdo territory on the map of Japan used to depict the Olympic Torch Relay on the official Tokyo 2020 website has riled up officials here. South Korea’s foreign ministry dedicates part of its own website to explaining why Dokdo, made up of two rocky islands and dozens more islets, is Korean territory. And Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong called the inclusion of Dokdo on the Olympic Torch Relay map “unacceptable,” vowing to address “as strongly as possible” what is just the latest in a line of claims Japan has made to the islands. But will the International Olympic Committee get involved as it has in the past?
