Is this North Korea’s dialogue dance or a new confrontation?

With North Korea seemingly shutting the door on dialogue, how can South Korea and the U.S. expect to restart diplomacy again with Pyongyang? North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Son-gwon is the latest senior official in Pyongyang to pour cold water on hopes for peace, saying the North isn’t considering “even the possibility of any contact with the U.S.” And that was after leader Kim Jong-un’s sister Kim Yo-jong warned Washington has “wrong” expectations for dialogue with Pyongyang. Yet South Korea and the U.S. aren’t being deterred. The U.S. State Department responded to Ri by insisting Washington remains open to diplomacy, after special envoy Sung Kim earlier stated the U.S. is ready to meet with the North “anytime, anywhere, without preconditions.”
