SEOUL, July 26 (Yonhap) – Fashion that once had been a trend in the 1990s is again gaining popularity among the youngsters in their 20~30s these days.
Fashion companies are launching retro style products mostly known as crop tops and wide pants sets. It seems the ‘brands in our memories’ are now back, facing their 2nd heydays.
One of the brands back to being loved by young people is Lee, said a fashion company on the 25th.
Lee is a US brand for jeans and came into Korea in 1985 with Ssangbangwool’s acquiring contract for its license which expired in 2005. Another fashion brand, Barrels, starting from this year, is now in sales in Korea.
Among the Z generation youngsters, who are in their early or mid-20s, Lee brand’s logo T-shirts and hats are particularly popular.
On an online fashion store, Musinsa’s live broadcast on the 19th, in 1 hour a 150 million worth of Lee’s T-shirts and baseball caps were sold.
True Religion, a jeans brand with its unique stitches of huge horse hooves, is once again opening shops in Korea thanks to the retro trend.
This brand had a short rise in the early 2000s in Korea but stopped selling in 2017. Recently Star Collabo, a clothing wholesaler, has attained a domestic license in Korea and is releasing “2021 F/W Collection” on the end of next month.
It will be selling products mostly via online shopping malls and is planning to create an official online site for Korea.
Champion, a sportswear brand with a little 1990s style, has been back in trend since a few years ago.
LF, importer of Champion, announced about a 100% increase in sales of spring and summer season products on the mid of this month compared to that of last year.
An official from LF said, “A T-shirt with a printed photo from an old source ranked in top 5 of this summer season sales.”
Domestic fashion companies are also manufacturing 1990s’ youngsters-style clothing.
Especially, we can easily see crop tops also called ‘belly button T-shirts’ in Korea, and pants long in width (wide pants).
8 Seconds, a SPA (Specialty retailer of Private label Apparel) brand of Samsung construction company’s fashion category, set out crop tops with bright colors and dotted patterns aiming for the Z generation.
The company’s women clothing brand, Kuho-Plus displayed royal blue sleeveless crop tops and wide pants that match with the summer air.
VOV, Shinsegae International’s women’s brand, revealed 12 types of cropped outwears including jackets and jumpers. 9 of these are in reproduction and the 3rd reproduction of summer short sleeved crop jackets is out of stock.
“Short and fit tops with wide bottoms are perceived as a ‘dope’ style”, said an official from Samsung Construction’s Fashion.
