KickFlip makes quick return with album themed on first love

SEOUL, Sept. 22 (Yonhap) -- KickFlip, the newest boy group from JYP Entertainment, will release its third album of the year Monday.
Titled "My First Flip," the album comes just four months after the group's second EP, "Kick Out, Flip Now!" The K-pop septet explores the story of a schoolboy's slightly awkward yet endearing first love in the new release, which drops at 6 p.m.
"My First Flip" features seven tracks, including "My First Love Song," "Band-Aid," "Crush," "Gas On It" and "404: Not Found." All members contributed to the songwriting credits across the album.
Team leader Kyehoon picked "empathy" and "comfort" as the keywords for the album.
"I think it's a first love that anyone could experience, and an experience of being rejected after bravely confessing is something everyone has gone through. I hope many people can relate when they listen to our album," he said.
The lead track, "My First Love Song," is an uptempo dance song based on pop punk, blending powerful synth sounds with guitar riffs. It captures the moment of confessing with a pounding heart, delivering the fresh emotions of a first love through the energy of KickFlip.
Donghyeon, who participated in writing and composing the song, said he wanted to try a different concept from the first two albums -- which carry a playful and rebellious message about a schoolboy determined to stay true to himself despite unsolicited advice from his mother and teacher -- and instead crafted a love story with fans in mind.
"I thought a scene of confessing love under the sunset sky after school would be fresh and innocent," said the band's youngest member, who is still in high school.
Minje, who co-wrote the track "Band-Aid," said, "I got a great opportunity to participate, and it was a good experience that helped me take a step closer to music."
The group will carry out promotional activities for the album with six members, as Amaru will be pausing all activities due to health issues.
JYP founder and chief producer Park Jin-young recently advised the group to focus on what sets it apart from other boy bands, according to Kyehoon.
"He told us that while this album is important, it's even more crucial for us to recognize KickFlip's strengths and continue building on them in the future," Kyehoon said. "Since our strength lies in live performance, we plan to showcase it on stage with a bright and energetic show."
