Yonhap News signs partnership with Korea-Africa Foundation
SEOUL, Feb. 4 (Yonhap) -- Yonhap News Agency, South Korea's leading newswire service, on Tuesday signed a partnership agreement with the Korea-Africa Foundation to develop diverse content and advance public interest projects related to Africa.
The agreement was signed at Yonhap's headquarters in Seoul by Hwang Dae-il, the company's president and CEO, and Kim Young-chae, president of the foundation affiliated with the foreign ministry, the news agency said in a statement.
Under the partnership, the two organizations will cooperate to enhance public awareness of Africa, which has emerged as a key driver of global growth, and to lay the groundwork for increased exchanges between South Korea and African nations.
In November last year, Yonhap launched South Korea's first dedicated department focused on African content and related business projects among domestic media outlets. The initiative aims to help Korea rediscover Africa, the world's youngest continent and a land of opportunity, and to contribute to finding ways for mutual cooperation.
Since then, Yonhap has been expanding its role as a bridge between Korea and Africa through various partnerships with African news agencies. Notably, it signed a news exchange agreement with Senegal's national news agency, Agence de Presse Senegalaise (APS), in December. APS produces and distributes news in 10 languages, including French, English, Arabic and Chinese.
Currently, Yonhap has partnerships with eight African news agencies, including APS.
"This agreement will greatly contribute to building and developing a foundation for mutual prosperity between Korea and Africa," Hwang said. "As South Korea's key news agency, we will establish an effective and sustainable strategy for engaging with Africa, and expand the depth and scope of media diplomacy."
Kim said the partnership will help increase Koreans' understanding of Africa, and foster exchanges and cooperation between South Korea and African nations.
"We will work closely with Yonhap News Agency to achieve tangible outcomes," he added.
