GYEONGJU, July 10 (Yonhap) -- Silla completes its first unified kingdom on the Korean Peninsula by conquering Goguryeo following Baekje and later driving out Tang China, which wanted to dominate the Korean Peninsula directly. It was King Munmu who reigned from 661 to 681 AD and achieved the great accomplishment. To commemorate King Munmu, who wished to become a dragon of the East Sea after his death and protect Silla, King Shinmun—the son of King Munmu—built a Buddhist temple called Gameunsa. Located in Gyeongju, the Gameunsa is a shrine temple. Although the building has disappeared, two three-storied stone stupas stand tall as a record of history.
