Election watchdog moves to cancel appointments in preferential hiring scandal

SEOUL, April 8 (Yonhap) -- The National Election Commission (NEC) said Tuesday it is in the process of canceling the appointments of 10 individuals involved in alleged preferential hiring, including children of senior NEC officials.

The move follows a February report by the Board of Audit and Inspection (BAI), which showed NEC officials had frequently solicited jobs for their family members.

After conducting an internal probe, the NEC suspended 11 individuals from their duties and referred the cases to the police for further investigation.

Last week, the NEC sent summons notices to the individuals and began the process of disciplinary hearings. One individual has already been dismissed.

The agency also took disciplinary measures against 16 employees who facilitated the illegal hiring, including issuing dismissals.

Earlier this year, the NEC said it inspected all 291 rounds of recruitment of experienced employees conducted since 2013 and confirmed 878 violations of regulations.
