N. Korea's Kim inspects nuclear-material production base, urges strengthening of nuclear shield: KCNA

SEOUL, Jan. 29 (Yonhap) -- North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has inspected a nuclear-material production base and a nuclear weapons institute, calling for overfulfilling the plan for producing weapons-grade nuclear materials and strengthening the country's nuclear shield, state media said Wednesday.

"This year is ... an important watershed in which we should carry out the tasks in the important period in the course of implementing the line of bolstering up the nuclear forces," the Korean Central News Agency quoted Kim as saying during the inspection, without specifying the date.

He also underlined the need to "achieve epochal successes in overfulfilling the plan for producing weapons-grade nuclear materials and in strengthening the nuclear shield of the country," the KCNA noted.

The leader said the country's nuclear technical forces are growing stronger day by day, affirming that "guaranteeing peace and security by dint of strength is our mode of struggle and option."

The external situation facing North Korea "remains grave and the challenges of the hostile forces are becoming ever more pronounced," he said, adding that nuclear weapons stockpiling and its increase by geometrical progression provide an absolute force capable of thoroughly containing North Korea's enemies.
